Alexandra is a small suburb located near Mackay in the Mackay Region, Queensland, Australia. It is known for its history with sugarcane farming. In 2021, about 189 people lived there.

Where is Alexandra?

Alexandra is a flat area with low-lying land. The Pioneer River is to the north, and Bakers Creek is to the south. The Peak Downs Highway runs through the middle of the suburb. The Mackay–Eungella Road also passes through. Most homes in Alexandra are found near these two main roads. A large part of the land in the suburb is used for growing sugarcane.

In the past, a railway line called the Finch Hatton branch went through Alexandra. There was a train station in the area. After the railway closed, a special tramway was built. This tramway helped transport harvested sugarcane from the fields to the sugar mills.

History of Alexandra

The suburb of Alexandra got its name from the Alexandra sugar mill. This mill was named after Princess Alexandra of Denmark. She married Prince Edward in 1863, who later became King Edward VII of Great Britain.

The Alexandra sugar mill was built in 1868. It was the biggest sugar mill in Queensland at that time. The mill operated until 1884. It was located just south of where the old Alexandra railway station used to be.
