Alexandra Sergeevna Obolentseva (born on June 21, 2001) is a talented chess player from Russia. She became a Woman Grandmaster in 2018, which is a very high title in chess given by FIDE (the International Chess Federation). Alexandra has won many big chess tournaments for young players, including the World Youth Chess Championships and the European Schools Chess Championships.

Alexandra's Chess Journey

Alexandra started playing chess in September 2007. She was just six years old at the time. She began her training at Sport School No. 4 in Tula. Her first coach was Nikolai Mikhailovich Golovin.

Early Wins in Russia

Alexandra quickly showed her skill. She won the Russian Youth Championships three times.

  • In 2012, she won in the girls Under 12 category.

First International Competitions

In 2009, Alexandra played in a children's event at the "Moscow Open" chess festival. She finished first, which qualified her for the World School Chess Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece. There, she placed fifth in the Girls Under 9 group. She also came in first place in the Under 8 subgroup.

In 2010, Alexandra competed in the 6th World School Chess Championships in Kayseri, Turkey. She finished second in the girls Under 9 section. She lost only on a tie-break to Khanim Balajayeva from Azerbaijan. Later that year, at the World Youth Championships in Halkidiki, Greece, she had a new coach, Vladimir Vulfson. She finished third in the girls Under 10 division. Because of this great result, FIDE gave her the title of Woman Candidate Master.

Becoming a World Champion

November 2011 was a big moment for Alexandra. At the World Youth Championships in Caldas Novas, Brazil, she won the gold medal. She became the girls Under 10 world champion! This amazing win earned her the title of Woman FIDE Master.

In 2012, she continued her success. She won the girls Under 11 event at the World School Championships in Iași, Romania. She also won a bronze medal at the European Youth Chess Championships in Prague. This was in the girls Under 12 category.

More European Success

In 2013, Alexandra played for Russia's second team. This was in the girls' section of the European Youth Team Championship in Maribor, Slovenia. In 2014, she won the girls Under 13 event at the European School Chess Championships in Kavala, Greece.

In 2015, she won the European Schools Championship in the Girls Under 15 division. She also took home a bronze medal in the Girls Under 14 event at the European Youth Championship.

Achieving Woman Grandmaster Title

February 2016 was another important time for Alexandra. She shared first place with Anastasia Bodnaruk and Soumya Swaminathan in the women's event of the Moscow Open. She finished third after tie-breaks. During this tournament, she earned a norm for the title of International Master (IM). This was thanks to her high rating performance of 2548.

In June 2016, she won the girls Under 15 event at the European School Chess Championship in Halkidiki. The next month, she played for the Russian team in the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad in Poprad, Slovakia. Her team won the silver medal. In October, Alexandra won a silver medal in the Girls Under 18 event at the World Youth Championships in Khanty-Mansyisk.

In 2017, she competed again in the World Youth U16 Olympiad for Russia. Her team won the gold medal this time! The next year, she took silver again in the Girls Under 18 section at the World Youth Championships in Halkidiki. In October 2019, she won a bronze medal in the World Youth Chess Championship in the girls Under 18 age group.

Recent Team Achievements

Alexandra has also been successful in team events. She won the 2018/2019 and 2019/2021 editions of the Frauen-Bundesliga with her team, SC Bad Königshofen. In May 2023, she helped the Moscow Chess Team win the Russian Women's Team Championship.
