Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Alexis André was born in a place called Kergompez, in France, on July 6, 1832. He decided to become a priest and was officially ordained on July 14, 1861. Right after becoming a priest, he was sent far away to Canada. His mission was to serve as a missionary in the Red River Colony and the Dakota Territory.
Working with the Métis People
Father André spent a lot of his time helping people in what are now Manitoba and the Northwest Territories (which today include parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta). He was especially dedicated to serving the Métis people. The Métis are a unique Indigenous group with mixed European and Indigenous ancestry. Father André worked closely with them, understanding their culture and needs. He even held the very first Catholic mass in Prince Albert.
A Spiritual Advisor
Because Father André had such a close relationship with the Métis community, he was asked to be the spiritual advisor for Louis Riel. This happened before Riel's important trial in 1885. Father André's role was to offer spiritual guidance and support to Riel during a very difficult time.
Later Years
In 1887, Father André was assigned to the mission in Calgary. He continued his work there until his death. Father Alexis André passed away in Calgary on January 10, 1893. His dedication to the communities he served, especially the Métis, left a lasting impact on Western Canada.
