Alfredo Cristiano Keil (born July 3, 1850 – died October 4, 1907) was a talented Portuguese artist. He was known as a composer and a painter during the Romantic period.
Alfredo Keil was born in Lisbon, Portugal. His family had German roots. He is remembered as one of Portugal's most important Romantic composers. He was also seen as the last major Portuguese painter in the Romantic style.

Alfredo Keil was also a gifted composer. He became famous for his operas, which are plays set to music. Some of his well-known operas include Donna Bianca (from 1888), Irene (from 1893), and Serrana (from 1899). At the time, Serrana was even considered the best Portuguese opera ever!
The Portuguese National Anthem
One of Alfredo Keil's most important works is the music for A Portuguesa. This is the national anthem of Portugal. He composed the music in 1891. The words for the anthem were written by a poet named Henrique Lopes de Mendonça.
