Ali Azmat Pacha (born 20 April 1966) is a famous Pakistani singer, songwriter, musician, and actor. He is best known as the lead singer for the popular Sufi rock band Junoon. After his time with Junoon, he also started a successful solo music career and later became an actor.
In 2001, Ali Azmat and Junoon made history. They were the first Pakistani band to perform at the United Nations General Assembly. This was a huge moment for Pakistani music!

Early Life and Start in Music
Ali Azmat was born in Havelian, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His family came from Kashmir. His grandfather worked as a station master in Havelian. Ali grew up in Lahore and speaks Punjabi.
He went to Sydney, Australia, for his higher studies. However, he soon returned to Pakistan before finishing university. His first band was called Jupiters. They were known for playing cover songs at small shows in Lahore.
Music Journey
Starting with Jupiters
Ali Azmat began his music journey with Jupiters in 1986. The band was based in his hometown of Lahore. Jupiters often played covers of American pop and rock songs. While with Jupiters, Ali wrote a very famous song called "Dosti." He later sang and recorded "Dosti" with Junoon, and it became a national hit.
Becoming Famous with Junoon
In 1990, Ali Azmat left Jupiters to join Junoon. This was a big step in his career. His first album with Junoon was simply called Junoon. The band's founder, Salman Ahmad, who was also the lead guitarist, produced this album. Ali sang on most of the songs.
Junoon became very famous after their second album, Talaash, was released. Their 1995 album, Inquilaab, was a huge success. The song "Jazba-e-Junoon" from this album was a super hit. It became the band's signature song. It was even chosen as the national song for the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the Pakistan national cricket team.
Ali Azmat gained even more success with the Sufi rock hit song "Sayonee." This song was from their fourth album, Azadi (1997). In 1996, Junoon released Kashmakash, which was the first compilation album in Pakistan. One of its new songs, "Ehtesaab," caused some debate.
In 1997, Junoon released their fourth studio album, Azadi. This album brought the band international fame. In 1999, they released their fifth album, Parvaaz, which had many Sufi songs. Their sixth album, Ishq (also known as Andaz internationally), came out in 2001. The band's seventh and last studio album, Dewaar, was released in 2005.
After 13 years, Junoon reunited for a concert in Karachi on December 25, 2016.
Solo Music Career
After Junoon broke up, Ali Azmat started his solo career. His first solo album was Social Circus (2005). The song "Na Re Na" from this album was very popular.
He then released four more albums:
- Klashinkfolk (2008)
- Josh-e-Junoon (2010) – The title track "Josh-e-Junoon" became the anthem for the Pakistan cricket team during the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
- Bum Phatta (2011)
- Chalta Main Jaun (2011)
Singing for Bollywood
Ali Azmat also sang for Bollywood movies. In 2003, his song "Garaj Baras" from Junoon's album Azadi was used in the movie Paap.
Acting Career
Ali Azmat started acting in the 1990s. He appeared in a TV film called Talaash, which also featured his band Junoon. Later, he acted in popular movies like Waar (2013) and The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022).
Personal Life
Ali Azmat is married and has two daughters. He has also discussed important ideas and philosophies on a TV show called Iqbal Ka Pakistan.

Awards and Nominations
Junoon won the Best International Group award at the Channel V Awards in New Delhi in 1998. They beat famous bands like The Prodigy and Def Leppard. Their first international album, Azadi, sold incredibly well in India. The song "Sayonee" was at the top of the MTV India and Channel V charts for over two months.
In 2004, Junoon won the Award for Best Rock Band at the Indus Music Awards. They also received awards from ARY Asian/Bollywood Awards. Junoon has been honored by the BBC, UNESCO, and the South Asian Journalists Association for their work promoting peace and South East culture. Junoon was nominated for Best Musical Group at the Lux Style Awards many times.
