Early Life and School

Ali Azmat Pacha was born in Havelian, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His family came from Kashmir. His grandfather worked as a station master at the Havelian railway station.

Ali grew up in Garhi Shahu, Lahore. He speaks Punjabi as his first language. His father, Nazir Ahmed Butt, was a businessman. He passed away in 2013.

Ali went to Sydney, Australia, for his college studies. But he had to return to Pakistan before finishing his degree. This was because of money problems.

His first band was called Jupiters. They were known for playing cover songs at small shows in Lahore.

Music Career

Starting with Jupiters

Ali Azmat began his music journey with the band Jupiters in 1986. The band was based in his hometown of Lahore. Jupiters often played cover versions of American pop and rock songs.

While with Jupiters, Ali wrote a very popular song called "Dosti" (which means "Friendship"). He later sang and recorded "Dosti" with his next band, Junoon. This song became famous all over Pakistan.

Joining Junoon

In 1990, Ali Azmat left Jupiters to join a new band called Junoon. He released his first album with Junoon, also called Junoon. The band's founder and lead guitarist, Salman Ahmad, produced this album. Ali sang on most of the songs.

Big Hits and International Fame

Junoon's 1995 album, Inquilaab, was a huge success. Its only single, "Jazba-e-Junoon", was a super hit. It reached the top of the music charts. This song became Junoon's signature song. It was also the national song for the 1996 Cricket World Cup and the Pakistan national cricket team.
