Ali Babacan (born 4 April 1967) is a Turkish politician, economist, and engineer. He is the founder and current leader of the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA). He served for 13 years in important government roles. These included being the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Economy, and Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey. He also worked as the Chief Negotiator for Turkey's talks to join the European Union. He was a member of the Turkish parliament too.
Mr. Babacan first became the Minister of State for economic affairs in 2002. He helped guide Turkey's economy through a tough period. Under his leadership, the Turkish economy got much better after some big problems. He focused a lot on making economic changes.
In 2019, Babacan left the AKP because he had "deep differences" with the party's direction. In 2020, he started his own party, the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA). This party later joined the Nation Alliance, which is a group that opposes the AKP and Turkish president Erdoğan.

Early Life and Education
School and University
Ali Babacan was a very good student. He graduated from TED Ankara College in 1985 as the top student in his class.
He then went to Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. In 1989, he earned a degree in Industrial Engineering. He got the highest possible grades there, a perfect 4.00 out of 4.00.
Studies in the U.S.
After university, Babacan went to the U.S. He had a special scholarship called a Fulbright Scholarship. In 1992, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. He focused on marketing, how organizations work, and international business.
Career in Finance
After his studies, Babacan worked for two years at a company called QRM, Inc. in Chicago, Illinois. This company helped top managers of big banks in the U.S. with financial advice.
He came back to Turkey in 1994. That same year, he worked as a chief advisor to the mayor of Ankara. From 1994 to 2002, he was the chairman of his family's textile company.
Political Career
Government Roles (2002–2015)
Ali Babacan started his political career in 2001. He was one of the people who helped create the Justice and Development Party (AKP). In 2002, he was elected to parliament as a representative for Ankara.
On 18 November 2002, he became the Minister of Economy. He was the youngest person in the government at that time, at 35 years old.
In 2005, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan chose him to lead Turkey's talks to join the European Union. These talks began on 3 October 2005. As a government minister, Babacan went to many international meetings. These included the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
In 2019, Babacan left the ruling AKP. He said he had "deep differences" about the party's direction.
Leading the DEVA Party (2020–Present)
In late 2019, Babacan shared his plan to start a new political party. He wanted his party to be a "mainstream party." It would focus on things like the rights of different groups, bringing back Turkey's parliamentary system, and making sure courts and laws are fair. He also wanted to bring back freedom of speech.
On 9 March 2020, he officially founded the Democracy and Progress Party. Its short name is "DEVA," which means "remedy" in Turkish. The DEVA Party held its first meeting on 10 March 2020. At this meeting, Ali Babacan was chosen as the Chairman.

Ali Babacan is married and has three children. He also speaks English.
