History
Allen was first settled a long time ago, in the early 1800s. The first post office opened in 1854 and was called "Mouth of Beaver."
The town started to grow quickly around 1904-1905. This happened after a train station was built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. The station was sometimes called "Beaver Creek" or "Beaver Creek Junction."
In 1905, a new post office opened. It was named "Allen" after a local person named T.J. Allen. The town officially became a city in 1913. This was approved by the state assembly. In 1936, the train station's name was changed to avoid confusion with mail delivery. A new area called "New Allen" started to develop outside the city in 1937. This happened after a bridge was built across the Levisa Fork River.
In October 1981, a sad event occurred in Allen. In June 2022, there was another tragic event where police officers were hurt.
