Allington is a part of Bridport in Dorset, England. It's located just north-west of Bridport town centre, next to the River Brit. Allington used to be a separate village, but it grew and joined up with Bridport by the late 1800s.

Allington Hill is a hill that stands about 89 meters (292 feet) tall above the town. The Woodland Trust looks after it. It's a typical 'Upper Greensand' hill, like others you can find in the nearby Marshwood and Powerstock Vales area.

A Look Back at Allington's History

In 1086, a very old survey called the Domesday Book mentioned Allington as Adelingtone. Back then, it had 21 homes, land for three plows, about 10 acres (4 hectares) of meadow, and one mill. It was part of Goderthorn Hundred, and a person named Turstin, son of Rolf, was its main owner.

St Swithun's Church

The church in North Allington is called St Swithun's Church. It was designed by Charles Wallis from Dorchester and built between 1826 and 1827. This church is a special 'Grade II*' listed building, which means it's very important historically. It's built in a classical style and is quite unique because many of its original features, like the pews (church benches), a gallery, and even one of its pulpits, are still there.

How Allington is Governed

Allington is part of the Bridport local area. It's included in the Bridport West and Allington 'electoral ward'. This ward helps choose five people to be part of the Bridport Town Council.

The bigger local government for Allington is the Dorset unitary authority. Allington is in the Bridport electoral ward, which elects three people to the larger Dorset Council.

For national elections, Allington is part of the West Dorset parliamentary area. This is where people vote for a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent them in the UK Parliament.

Allington as a Former Parish

Historically, Allington was its own separate civil parish (a small local area with its own council). Over time, many parts of Allington, including the area around St Swithun's Church, became part of Bridport. This meant that only some suburban and rural areas remained in the Allington parish.

On April 1, 2024, the Allington parish was officially ended. Any rural parts of the parish that weren't taken into Bridport parish became part of Symondsbury parish. In the 2011 census, the Allington civil parish had 371 homes and a population of 766 people.
