Geography of Almaty Region
Almaty Region is a province that completely surrounds the big city of Almaty. This region shares its borders with two other countries. To the south, it borders Kyrgyzstan. To the east, it borders the Xinjiang province in China.
Inside Kazakhstan, Almaty Region also touches three other provinces. These are Jambyl Province to the west, Karagandy Province to the northwest, and East Kazakhstan Province to the north. The total size of Almaty Region is about 224,000 square kilometers. That's a very large area!
History of Almaty Region
The area we now call Almaty Region has a long history. It was officially created on March 10, 1932. Back then, it was known as Alma-Ata Province. Its first capital city was Alma-Ata, which is now called Almaty.
Over the years, parts of the province were sometimes separated. The northeastern part, around Taldykorgan, even became its own province called Taldy-Kurgan Province for a while. But then it would merge back into Alma-Ata Province.
In April 2001, something important happened. The main administrative center of Almaty Province moved. It moved from Almaty city to Taldykorgan. This made Taldykorgan the capital of the province once again.
