History of Almont
Almont was first settled in 1828 by a person named James Deneen. It got its first post office in 1835. This post office was called Bristol, named after Oliver Bristol, who was the second person to settle there permanently.
The village was officially mapped out in 1836 and was first named Newburg. Later, in 1846, its name was changed to Almont.
Why Almont Was Named Almont
Ever wonder how Almont got its unique name? According to a book called "Almont, The Tale of Then and Now" by HildaMae Bowman, the village's name was changed in 1845. It was chosen to honor Juan Almonte, a general from Mexico.
Where is Almont?
Almont is a village that covers about 1.34 square miles (3.48 square kilometers) of land. There's no water area within the village limits.
The center of Almont is where two main roads meet: M-53 (also known as Van Dyke) and St. Clair Street. If you go east on St. Clair, it becomes Almont Road. If you go west, it becomes General Squire Road. Sometimes, people also call this area "40 Mile Road."
Almont is surrounded by other towns. To the south, you'll find Bruce Township and Romeo. To the northwest is Dryden, and to the north is Imlay City. East of Almont is Allenton, and to the northeast is Capac. Almont is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of the big city of Detroit.
