Exploring Alpine's Location
Alpine is found at the southern end of the Snake River Canyon. This is where the Snake River flows into the Palisades Reservoir.
Why it's Called Alpine Junction
The town is also called Alpine Junction. This is because two major roads, U.S. Route 26 and U.S. Route 89, meet here. They run together through the Snake River Canyon from Jackson. In Alpine, Route 89 turns south towards Afton. Route 26 turns north and follows the edge of Palisades Reservoir.
Rivers Meeting Point
Three important rivers come together near Alpine: the Snake, the Salt, and the Greys. The Greys River joins the Snake River right where the reservoir's water level is high. The Salt River flows directly into the reservoir nearby.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Alpine covers an area of about 2.58 square kilometers (1 square mile). Almost all of this area is land.
