Amaia Romero Arbizu (born January 3, 1999), known as Amaia, is a Spanish singer, songwriter, pianist, and actress. She became famous after winning Operación Triunfo, a popular TV music contest. After her win, she represented Spain at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. She sang "Tu Canción" with Alfred García. Amaia later signed with Universal Music. She released her first album, Pero No Pasa Nada, in 2019.

Early Life
Amaia Romero was born on January 3, 1999, in Pamplona, Navarre, Spain. Her parents are Ángel Romero and Javiera Arbizu. Amaia comes from a family of musicians. Her uncle, Joaquín Romero, managed the Orfeón Pamplonés choir for many years. He also led the Pablo Sarasate Orchestra.
Her uncle noticed that Amaia had absolute pitch when she was a child. This means she could identify any musical note just by hearing it. Her aunt, Carmen Arbizu, teaches singing at a music school. In 2019, Amaia finished her piano studies at this school.
Career
Early Years (2009–2016)
Amaia first appeared on TV in 2009. She was ten years old and played the piano in a children's talent contest. She finished third in her instrument category. A year later, she was on the TV show Cántame Una Canción. There, she sang with famous Spanish artists.
In 2012, she joined El Número Uno, another talent show. She was eliminated in the sixth week. The judges included well-known singers like Mónica Naranjo. Amaia met Mónica again later on Operación Triunfo. In 2012, she also met Felipe VI and Letizia Ortiz, who would become the King and Queen of Spain. They told her she had a bright future after seeing her perform.
In 2016, Amaia worked with the band Lemon y Tal. She sang on their song "Cicatrices de mi realidad."
Operación Triunfo and Eurovision (2017–2018)
In July 2017, Amaia tried out for Operación Triunfo. This is a reality TV music competition. On October 23, 2017, she was chosen to join the show's "academy." She sang David Bowie's "Starman." The judges did not pick her, but the teachers saved her.
In January 2018, Amaia became a finalist. She got a perfect score from the jury, which was the highest score ever on the show. She was known for her unique style and humor. Amaia won the competition with 46% of the public votes. After winning, she signed a deal with Universal Music.
Amaia then went on a big concert tour with her fifteen fellow contestants. The tour, called OT 2017 en concierto, started in March 2018. It had 23 concerts and was seen by 300,000 people.
As a finalist on Operación Triunfo, Amaia also had a chance to represent Spain at Eurovision. This is a huge international music competition. For the special Eurovision selection show, she sang three songs. One was "Tu Canción" with Alfred García, who was her boyfriend at the time. This song was chosen by the public to represent Spain.
Amaia and Alfred performed second at the Eurovision final in Lisbon, Portugal. They finished twenty-third out of 26 countries. They received 61 points. Amaia said she was still happy with the result.
First Solo Album (2018–2020)
Amaia started her solo music career in mid-2018. She moved to Barcelona and finished her degree in classical piano. She also toured Spain with The Free Fall Band. They played traditional Spanish pop and indie pop songs. In September 2018, she sang with the famous band U2 at their concert in Madrid.
She started working on her first solo album. It was recorded in New York City, Barcelona, and Buenos Aires. On December 18, 2018, Amaia released a short song called "Un Nuevo Lugar." It reached number 37 on the Spanish sales chart. Before that, she also released a song called "Perdona (Ahora Sí Que Sí)" with the rock band Carolina Durante.
In January 2019, Amaia announced a tour of music festivals for the summer. The tour started in May and ended in August. She finished recording her first album, Pero No Pasa Nada, after working with Argentine singer-songwriter Santiago Motorizado. The first song from the album, "El Relámpago," came out in May 2019. It reached number 24 on the Spanish chart.
Pero No Pasa Nada was released on September 20, 2019. It became number one on the Spanish albums chart. Amaia's first solo concert tour, the Pero No Pasa Nada Tour, started in October. It ended in September 2021, after some shows were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Amaia also appeared in the Spanish Netflix series Paquita Salas. She sang a traditional Spanish song for the show's soundtrack. She also sang "Luz y Sombra" for the movie Legado en los Hueso. In January 2020, Amaia performed at the 34th Goya Awards to honor singer Marisol. She also sang songs for the TV series Veneno. In August 2020, she released two more songs, "Cosas Interesantes Para Decir" and "La Victoria."
On May 1, 2020, Amazon Prime Video released Una Vuelta Al Sol. This documentary shows how Amaia made her album and gives a look at her tour. The documentary was nominated for an award at the Latin Grammy Awards.
Second Album and Acting (2021–Present)
In October 2020, Amaia worked with Alizzz on his song "El Encuentro." This song was very popular and won an award. Alizzz then became the main producer for Amaia's second album, Cuando No Sé Quién Soy. The first song from this album, "Yo Invito," was released a year later and was well-received.
In November 2021, "Quiero Pero No" was released, featuring singer Rojuu. In January 2022, Amaia released "Yamaguchi." This folk song is about growing up and refers to a park in her hometown of Pamplona. She released "Bienvenidos al Show" two months later. "La Canción Que No Quiero Cantarte," featuring her friend and singer Aitana, came out on May 10.
Amaia's second album, Cuando No Sé Quién Soy, was released on May 13, 2022. It reached number two on the Spanish Albums Chart.
In 2023, Amaia started acting in the drama TV series La Mesías. She was nominated for an award for Best Supporting Actress for her role.
