Instagram Art Projects
In 2014, Ulman started a special art project on her Instagram account. It was called Excellences & Perfections. For four months, she pretended to be different made-up characters. Their stories unfolded in three parts. Her goal was to show how easily people can be tricked online. She used common types of characters to do this.
She took many selfies in hotels and restaurants in Los Angeles. She posted them as if they were her real life. This project changed where performance art could happen. It also added new ideas to feminist art. Excellences and Perfections was later shown at the Whitechapel Gallery in 2016.
In October 2014, Ulman had another show in London called The Destruction of Experience. For this show, she made a video essay. It was about Justin Bieber's journey from a young star to a grown-up.
In January 2015, she had her first solo show in New York City. It was called Stock Images of War. This show was an installation with twelve simple wire sculptures. Each one was named after a month, like "War in January."
Later in 2015, Ulman started another Instagram performance called Privilege. This project lasted for a year. It showed an exaggerated version of Ulman herself. She explored showing different sides of her personality in a business office setting.
Exhibitions and Recognition
In 2016, Excellences and Perfections was part of a group show. This show was called Performing for the Camera at Tate Modern in London. The exhibition looked at how photography and performance are connected. It showed over 500 works from the past 150 years. This included early photos and today's selfie culture.
Ulman's Instagram project helped show how social media fits into the history of photo performances. Her work was also part of the Electronic Highway exhibition. This was at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. Ulman has been called the first social network artist to be shown in major art galleries. Elle magazine even called her the "First great Instagram Artist."
