Ambrose Mandvulo Dlamini (born March 5, 1968 – died December 13, 2020) was an important business leader from Eswatini. He served as the tenth prime minister of Eswatini. He held this important job from October 2018 until he passed away in December 2020.
Ambrose Dlamini was born in the Manzini Region of Eswatini. He studied at the University of Swaziland and later earned a master's degree at Hampton University. After his studies, he worked in banking and telecommunications for over 18 years. He was a managing director at Nedbank and the CEO of MTN Eswatini.
In 2018, King Mswati III chose Dlamini to become prime minister. This happened after the previous prime minister, Barnabas Sibusiso Dlamini, died. Ambrose Dlamini was the youngest prime minister in Eswatini's history. He had not worked in government before. As prime minister, he focused on saving money for the government. He also made plans to improve the country's economy. He worked to make it easier for businesses to operate in Eswatini. He also led the country's council for AIDS awareness and prevention.

About Ambrose Dlamini
Ambrose Dlamini was born on March 5, 1968. His birthplace was Mbekelweni, which is in Eswatini's Manzini Region. His great-grandfather, Prince Malunge, was an uncle to King Sobhuza II. Dlamini was married to Portia Thwala-Dlamini. They had three children together. He went to the University of Swaziland for his first degree. Later, he earned his MBA from Hampton University.
Dlamini worked in the banking world for more than 18 years. From 2003 to 2010, he was a managing director at Nedbank. After that, from 2010 to 2018, he became the CEO of MTN Eswatini. This company is part of the larger South African MTN Group. In 2017, he helped MTN Eswatini sponsor the MTN SWAMA Awards. This event celebrates music and arts in Eswatini.
Becoming Prime Minister
On October 27, 2018, King Mswati III announced a big decision. He said that Ambrose Dlamini would be the next prime minister of Eswatini. This announcement was made at the royal kraal in Lobamba. Dlamini took over after Barnabas Sibusiso Dlamini passed away. Ambrose Dlamini had no experience working in government before this. He was the youngest person ever to lead the government in Eswatini.
The U.S. ambassador at the time, Lisa J. Peterson, commented on his appointment. She said it was not allowed by the country's rules. This was because he was not a member of the House of Assembly yet.
His Work as Prime Minister
As the new prime minister, Ambrose Dlamini had a main goal. He wanted to create a plan to help Eswatini's economy get better. To start, he cut down on government spending that was not essential. For example, he used the same official car as the previous prime minister. He also stopped politicians and government workers from flying in first class. He limited how much they could travel to other countries for official business.
The next year, he had to explain a government decision. They decided to stop increasing pay for public workers to match living costs. In 2020, he wrote articles in Business Day and the Financial Mail. In these articles, he shared his plans to grow the economy. He wanted to make it easier to start and run businesses in Eswatini. He also aimed to help the country's economy become more diverse.
Dlamini was also in charge of the National AIDS Council. He worked with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
His Passing and What Happened Next
Ambrose Dlamini had diabetes. On November 15, 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic in Eswatini. Eight days later, he went to the hospital because he had mild symptoms. In early December, he was moved to a hospital in South Africa. The Deputy Prime Minister, Themba N. Masuku, said Dlamini was stable and getting better.
However, Ambrose Dlamini passed away on December 13, 2020. He was 52 years old. He died from problems caused by COVID-19. He was the first country leader to die while in office from the pandemic. According to the Constitution of Eswatini, Themba Masuku was supposed to be the Acting Prime Minister for up to three months. Masuku served for almost seven months. In July 2021, King Mswati chose Cleopas Dlamini to take over as prime minister.
