Makhdoom Muhammad Ameen Faheem (Urdu: مخدوم محمد امین فہیم; born August 4, 1939 – died November 21, 2015) was an important Pakistani politician and a poet. He was a senior leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). He also led the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians and the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in political science from the University of Sindh in 1961. He began his political journey in 1970. He won the general elections that year. He was a close friend and supporter of Benazir Bhutto in the 1990s. He was also a spiritual leader of the Sarvari Jama'at, a Sufi group in his home province of Sindh. After winning the 2008 elections, he chose not to become prime minister. Instead, he supported Yousaf Raza Gillani for the role.

Life and Early Years

Makhdoom Muhammad Ameen Faheem was born in Hala, Sindh, on August 4, 1939. Hala is a city about 200 kilometers from Karachi. His father, Makhdoom Muhammad Zaman Talib-ul-Mola, was the 17th spiritual leader of the Sarwari Jammat. He was also a powerful landowner in the province.

His father was one of the 67 people who started the Pakistan Peoples Party. The PPP was actually founded at his father's house in Hala. Makhdoom Muhammad Zaman became a senior vice-chairman of the party. He also won the 1970 general elections. He became a member of the national parliament. He was offered many high-ranking jobs by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq. But he chose to stay in Hala and lead his Sarwari Jamaat.

Education and Career Start

Amin Fahim finished his primary schooling in 1955 in Hala. He completed high school in his hometown in 1957. After passing his university entrance exams, he joined the University of Sindh. In 1958, he decided to study political science. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in political science from Sindh University in 1961.

Political Journey

Amin Fahim joined the Pakistan Peoples Party as a young member during the 1970 general election. He won the election from his area, NA-Thatta, in Sindh. He worked in the Sindh Assembly for the PPP. There, he focused on human rights and improving education.

He ran in eight elections after that: 1977, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997, 2002, 2008, and 2013. He won every time, which was a national record. However, he did not take part in the 1985 elections. These elections were held by General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq's military government. His party decided to boycott them.

In 1993, he won both a provincial and a national assembly seat without anyone running against him. He was the only politician in Pakistan to do this. He later gave his provincial seat to his younger brother. His brother also won that seat without anyone running against him.

In 2002, General Pervez Musharraf offered Makhdoom Amin Fahim the job of Prime Minister. But he stayed loyal to his party. He also turned down offers from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and military rulers in the past.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim was a senior leader of the PPP. He was also the party's leader in the National Assembly. He served as a federal minister twice when Benazir Bhutto was Prime Minister.

  • From December 1988 to August 1990, he was the Minister of Communications.
  • From December 1988 to March 1989, he was the Minister of Railways.
  • From January 1994 to November 1996, he was the Minister for Housing and Works.

Personal Life

Makhdoom Amin Fahim was the spiritual leader of the "Sarwari Jamaat." This is a large group of millions of people around the world. It is said that 300 years ago, the Sarwari Jamaat had 900,000 followers. This led to it being called the 'No Lakhi Gadi,' meaning the seat of 900,000 disciples. He was once married to Dina, the older sister of the famous Bangladeshi singer Runa Laila. Dina later passed away due to cancer.

Amin Fahim died on November 21, 2015, at the age of 76. He passed away from leukemia (a type of cancer) in a hospital in Karachi, Pakistan.

After Benazir Bhutto's Death

After Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007, Makhdoom Amin Fahim was considered a possible new leader for the PPP. However, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Asif Ali Zardari became the party's co-chairs. Amin Fahim was then thought to be the party's choice for Prime Minister.

But after the PPP won the February 2008 election, the party was slow to name him as their candidate. Some thought that Benazir Bhutto's husband, Asif Ali Zardari, might not want to nominate him. This was because Zardari worried that Fahim might become too powerful in Sindh.

On March 15, 2008, Makhdoom Amin Fahim said he didn't understand why the PPP hadn't named him yet. He added that if Zardari wanted to be Prime Minister himself, he would support him. Later, on March 22, 2008, the PPP chose Yousaf Raza Gillani as Prime Minister. Even though this might have seemed like a setback for Amin Fahim, he said he would not leave the PPP. He also wished Gillani the best. As a way to recognize his loyalty, Amin Fahim was made the Commerce Minister of Pakistan in November 2008.

His Love for Poetry

Makhdoom Amin Fahim was initially more interested in poetry than politics. But he had to enter politics as the next leader of the Makhdoom family.

He once said, "Poetry is my first love. I still enjoy writing verses and reading other poets' work." He was especially good at mystic poetry. His poems often talked about love, Peace, and simplicity.

He also mentioned, "I have always loved the poetry of Maulana Rumi, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, and Sachal Sarmast. Their poetry has greatly influenced my life. I learned from them to be loyal and to be loved, no matter what."

He added, "I don't believe in ruling people. I believe in winning their hearts. That's why my voters love me, and they have never let me down."
