Runa Laila is a famous Bangladeshi singer and music composer. She was born on November 17, 1952. She started her singing career in the late 1960s in the Pakistani film industry.

Runa Laila is known for her unique singing style. She was inspired by the Pakistani singer Ahmed Rushdi. She often sang duets with him. She is one of the most well-known singers in South Asia. People often call her the "Queen of Melody" because of her beautiful voice.

She has sung in many films. Her songs in movies like The Rain (1976) and Jadur Banshi (1977) helped her win many awards. She has won seven Bangladesh National Film Awards for being the best female playback singer. She also won the Best Music Composer award for the film Ekti Cinemar Golpo (2018).

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Runa Laila was born in Sylhet, which was then part of East Bengal, Dominion of Pakistan. Today, Sylhet is in Bangladesh. Her father, Syed Mohammed Imdad Ali, was a government worker. Her mother, Amina Laila, was also a musical artist. Runa's uncle, Subir Sen, was a famous Indian singer.

Runa started learning dance styles like Kathak and Bharatanatyam when she was young. She was a big fan of singer Ahmed Rushdi. She looked up to him as her teacher and tried to sing and perform like him. She also learned classical music with her older sister, Dina Laila.

When Runa was 12 years old, she sang for a child actor in an Urdu film called Jugnu. The song was named Gudia Si Munni Meri. This was her first time singing for a movie.

A Career in Music

In 1966, Runa Laila became very popular in the Pakistani film industry. This happened with her song Unki Nazron Sey Mohabbat Ka Jo Paigham Mila from the film Hum Dono. She also performed on PTV. She even had her own show called Bazm E Laila.

Moving to Bangladesh and International Success

Runa Laila and her family moved to Bangladesh in 1974. Her first Bengali song was O Amar Jibon Shathi for the film Jibon Shathi (1976). Soon after, she had her first concert in India in 1974.

She became very popular in India with songs like O Mera Babu Chail Chabila and Dama Dam Mast Qalandar. Runa Laila holds a special record in the Guinness World Records. She recorded 30 songs in just 3 days! In 1982, her album Superuna sold over 100,000 copies on its first day. This earned her a Golden Disk Award.

Later Career and Many Languages

In 2009, Runa Laila released an album of Punjabi wedding songs called Kala Sha Kala. In 2012, she was a judge on an Indian TV singing contest called Sur Kshetra. She has sung in many different languages. These include her native Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Pashto, Baluchi, Arabic, Persian, Malay, Nepalese, Japanese, Italian, Spanish, French, and English.

Personal Life

Runa Laila has been married three times. Her current husband is actor Alamgir. She has a daughter named Tani. Her grandsons, Zain Islam and Aaron Islam, are talented soccer players. Zain was even selected for the Arsenal progression center when he was eight years old.

Charity Work

After her sister passed away from cancer in 1976, Runa Laila organized many charity concerts in Dhaka. The money raised from these concerts helped build a cancer hospital in Dhaka.

Runa Laila was also chosen as a SAARC Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS. She is the first person from Bangladesh to hold this important role. In 2013, she visited New Delhi for her first trip as the SAARC ambassador. She met with important government officials there.
