Amerson River Park is a super cool place in Macon, Georgia. It's also known as Amerson Water Works Park. This awesome urban park is a perfect spot for outdoor fun!

Sadly, the park had to close after a big flood in 1994. But don't worry, it got a huge makeover! In 2015, the park reopened with its new name, Amerson River Park. The renovations cost about 5.5 million dollars to make it even better.

Amerson River Park is huge! It covers more than 180 acres of land. It sits right next to the beautiful Ocmulgee River.

Explore the Trails and Nature

The park has a long trail that goes from east to west. You'll find different parts of the park along the way. The park is surrounded by thick forests, open meadows, and wet wetlands. There are 7 miles of paved trails, perfect for walking, running, or biking!

Fun Areas for Everyone

Amerson River Park has 6 different areas for you to enjoy. There are 3 pavilions where you can relax or have a picnic. You'll also find 2 big grassy areas for playing. Don't miss the amazing overlook for great views! Plus, there's a special playground that everyone can use, including kids with disabilities.

Part of a Bigger Adventure

Amerson Park is connected to the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail network. This means it's part of a larger system of trails. It's also the starting point of the Ocmulgee River Water Trail. This water trail is a 200-mile journey down the river! It ends where the Ocmulgee River meets the Oconee River, forming the Altamaha River.

The Park's Interesting History

Amerson River Park is named after a special person. His name was Frank C. Amerson, Jr. He was the Chairman of the Macon Water Authority back in 1976. The park area was once home to one of Macon Water Authority's water treatment plants. Chairman Amerson was honored for his work, and the park was named after him.

A National Champion Park

In 2019, Amerson River Park became super famous! It competed in the ELGLKnope National Championship. This competition recognized the best parks in the United States. Amerson River Park made it to the final round, beating 32 other amazing parks and public spaces! It was a huge achievement, even though McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park won the final vote.

Canoe and Tubing Fun

At the very northern end of the park, you'll find a canoe launch. This is where you can start your river adventure! There's also a fun tubing float that goes for 2 miles. It starts at the Jay Hall Memorial Canoe Launch. The float ends at the Bragg Jam Canoe and Tube Takeout.

Special Park Areas

Amerson River Park has 7 main areas, each with something unique. These include the Bluff Pavilion, Overlook Pavilion, and Porter Pavilion. You can also visit the Sheridan Overlook, the Great Plain, and Lawson Field.

The Atlanta Gas and Light Playground

One of the most special areas is the Atlanta Gas and Light Playground. This playground is known as Macon's first playground designed for everyone. It's built so that kids with disabilities can play and have fun too!
