Amerson River Park, also known as Amerson Water Works Park, is a cool urban park in Macon, Georgia. This park was closed for a while after a big flood in 1994. But don't worry, it got a huge makeover! In 2015, it reopened with a new name, Amerson River Park, after costing about 5.5 million dollars to fix up.

What's the Park Like?

This awesome park sits right next to the Ocmulgee River. It covers a huge area, more than 180 acres! Imagine walking through forests, open meadows, and even wetlands.

  • Trails for Fun: There are 7 miles of paved trails perfect for walking, running, or biking. You can explore different parts of the park as the trail winds from east to west.
  • Places to Hang Out: The park has 6 special spots for visitors. You'll find 3 pavilions where you can relax or have a picnic. There are also 2 big grassy areas for playing.
  • Amazing Views: Don't miss the overlook where you can see beautiful views of the river and nature.
  • Playground for Everyone: There's even a playground that's easy for everyone to use, including kids with disabilities.

Amerson Park is also part of a bigger network called the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail. It's also the starting point for the Ocmulgee River Water Trail. This is a 200-mile stretch of river that flows all the way to where the Oconee River meets it, forming the Altamaha.

Park History

Amerson River Park is named after a special person, Frank C. Amerson, Jr. He used to be in charge of the Macon Water Authority back in 1976. This park is actually one of the original spots where the Macon Water Authority had a water treatment plant. They decided to name the park after him to honor his work.

In 2019, Amerson River Park became super famous! It competed in the ELGLKnope National Championship. This competition recognized the best parks in the United States. Amerson River Park made it all the way to the final round, beating 32 other parks! Even though McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park won the final vote, it was a huge honor for Amerson Park to be recognized as one of the best.

Cool Things to Do

Amerson River Park has lots of cool features for you to enjoy!
