Ana Violeta Navarro-Cárdenas (born December 28, 1971) is a Nicaraguan-American political expert and TV personality. A political strategist is someone who helps politicians plan their campaigns. As a commentator, she shares her opinions on the news.

You can often see her on news channels like CNN, CNN en Español, and ABC News. She is also a co-host of the popular talk show The View. Her work on the show has earned her nominations for the Daytime Emmy Award.

Navarro calls her political views "centrist," meaning she holds a mix of ideas from different political sides. She was a strong critic of former Republican president Donald Trump. She has supported Democratic candidates like Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris in their presidential campaigns.

Early Life and Move to America

Ana Navarro was born in Nicaragua in 1971. Her family was wealthy and owned a lot of land for farming. Her father, José Augusto Navarro Flores, was once the Minister of Agriculture in the Nicaraguan government.

In 1980, when Ana was a child, her family moved to the United States. They left because of political problems in Nicaragua. Her father stayed behind to fight with a group called the Contras against the government at the time, known as the Sandinistas. Navarro has said that she became a lifelong Republican because U.S. President Ronald Reagan supported the Contras.

Navarro went to the Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, a private Catholic school for girls in Miami. She later went to the University of Miami, where she studied Latin American Studies and Political Science. In 1997, she earned a law degree from St. Thomas University School of Law.

Even as a student, Navarro was involved in politics. In college, she worked to get support for the Contras. In law school, she helped prevent Nicaraguan refugees from being sent back to their home country.

Career in Politics and Television

Navarro was a member of the Republican Party for many years. She worked for several Republican politicians. In 1998, she was on the team that helped Jeb Bush become the governor of Florida. She also worked as his Director of Immigration Policy.

She served as an ambassador to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. In this role, she spoke out against the government of Cuba for not respecting people's rights. She also helped with the presidential campaigns of John McCain in 2008 and Jon Huntsman Jr. in 2012.

In 2014, Navarro began working as a political commentator for ABC News. She also appears on CNN and CNN en Español to share her political opinions.

Since 2013, Navarro has been a part of the ABC talk show The View. She started as a guest co-host and became a permanent co-host in 2022. For her work on the show, she was nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards in 2020, 2022, and 2024.

Views on the Republican Party

Although she was a Republican, Navarro did not support Donald Trump when he ran for president in 2016. She became famous for criticizing him on CNN, especially after a recording was released where he made offensive comments. She called on other Republicans to stop supporting him. Because of her strong opposition to Trump, she is often called a "Never Trumper."

In the 2016 election, she voted for the Democratic candidate, Hillary Clinton. She said she did this because the election in her home state of Florida was very close. In 2020, she supported Joe Biden for president and helped raise money for his campaign. In 2024, she supported Kamala Harris and was a host at the 2024 Democratic National Convention.

Support for Social Issues

Navarro is a strong supporter of rights for LGBTQ+ people. In 2013, she supported the legalization of same-sex marriage. In 2017, she spoke out against the Trump administration's ban on transgender people serving in the military. Equality California, an organization that fights for LGBTQ+ rights, gave her an award in 2019 for her support.

..... She explained that seeing family members care for relatives with disabilities showed her how difficult raising children can be.

Stance on Gun Control

After the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May 2022, Navarro called for stronger gun control laws. She said she supports a ban on assault weapons. She criticized gun lobby groups and some Republican politicians. She said they should focus on banning guns to protect children, instead of focusing on other issues.
