History of Ancones
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it is a territory that belongs to the U.S. but is not fully a part of it, like a state.
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that Ancones and a nearby barrio called Sabana Eneas had a combined population of 1,132 people.
