The Andarax River is an important river located in the province of Almería, in the region of Andalusia, Spain. Sometimes, especially closer to the sea, people call it the Almería River. This river starts high up in the eastern part of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
The Andarax River flows entirely within the province of Almería. It travels through the beautiful Valley of Andarax, which is south of the Sierra Nevada. The river first flows eastwards. Then, it meets another river called the River Nacimiento near the village of Terque.
Journey of the Andarax River
After joining the Nacimiento River, the Andarax turns south. It then flows through the dry and unique Tabernas Desert. Here, it sometimes gets extra water from the Rambla de Tabernas, which is a stream that only flows after it rains. This is the last major stream that joins the Andarax.
Towns Along the River
The river passes through several towns and villages. These include Rioja, Pechina, Viator, and Benahadux. In these areas, the river's water is very important. It helps to water many farms, especially those growing citrus fruits like oranges and lemons.
Reaching the Sea
Finally, the Andarax River reaches the Mediterranean Sea. It flows into the sea on the edge of the city of Almería. As it gets closer to the sea, the river spreads out, forming a wide area called a delta. This is where the river's journey ends.
