Andenne (pronounced Ahn-den) is a city in Belgium. It is a municipality located in Wallonia. You can find it in the province of Namur.
As of January 1, 2006, Andenne had a population of 25,240 people. The city covers an area of 86.17 square kilometers. This means there were about 292 people per square kilometer. The city and its main area are built on both sides of the Meuse river.
The municipality of Andenne includes several smaller areas. These are called districts. They include Andenne, Bonneville, Coutisse, Landenne, Maizeret, Namêche, Sclayn, Seilles, Thon-Samson, and Vezin.

History of Andenne
The Legend of the Bear
Andenne has a special symbol: a bear. This comes from an old story. The legend says that Charles Martel, when he was a child, used a hammer to kill a bear. This bear was scaring the people of the town.
Early Buildings
The Collegiate Church of Saint Begga is an important old church in Andenne. It was built a very long time ago, in the 7th century. Andenne is also home to the Château du Moisnil, a historic castle.
Andenne During World War I
Andenne faced a very difficult time in 1914. This was during World War I. German troops entered the area on August 18, 1914. The local people had destroyed the bridges to stop them.
The next day, German soldiers entered the town. At first, there were no major fights. But soon, many civilians were gathered. They were taken to the main square. Sadly, many townspeople lost their lives during these events. Between 211 and 225 people were killed. This was a very sad part of Andenne's history.
Famous People from Andenne
Many interesting people have connections to Andenne.
- Saint Begga (613–693) was a very important person. She was the daughter of Pepin of Landen. She also founded a convent in Andenne. She was the first leader of this convent. Saint Begga is buried in the Collegiate Church of Saint Begga.
- Gertrude of Nivelles (around 628–659) was Saint Begga's younger sister. She helped found the Nivelles Abbey with her mother.
- Carl Johan Frederik Jakhelln (1914–1987) was a diplomat and writer from Norway.
- Fats Sadi (1927–2009) was a famous jazz musician.
- Cécile de France (born 1975) is a well-known actress.
