André Charles Ulrich Parrot (born February 15, 1901 – died August 24, 1980) was a famous French archaeologist. He was an expert in finding and studying ancient sites in the Near East, a region in Western Asia. He led important digs in countries like Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria. André Parrot is most well-known for his amazing work at Mari, Syria, where he led excavations for many years, from 1933 to 1975.

André Parrot was born in 1901 in a French town called Désandans. He grew up to become a very important figure in the world of archaeology and museums.

His Career in Museums

In 1946, André Parrot became a chief curator for the National Museums in France. This meant he was a top expert in charge of many important national collections. Later, from 1958 to 1962, he became the director of the famous Louvre Museum in Paris. This is one of the largest and most visited museums in the world!

Awards and Recognition

André Parrot received many honors for his work. He was a Commander of the Legion of Honour, which is a very high award given by the French government. He was also a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, a group of experts who study history and ancient languages.

Personal Life

André Parrot married his second wife, Marie-Louise Girod, in 1960. He passed away in Paris in 1980, leaving behind a great legacy of archaeological discoveries.
