Andreu Mas-Colell (born 29 June 1944) is a famous economist. He is known for his work in microeconomics, which studies how individuals and businesses make decisions. He is also a top mathematical economist, meaning he uses a lot of math in his economic studies.
He started the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics and teaches at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. He has also worked in the Catalan government several times as a minister. His book, Microeconomic Theory, is one of the most used textbooks for economics students around the world.
In 2021, there was a disagreement about government spending related to the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. Spain’s Court of Auditors looked into the matter. Some economists spoke out in support of Mas-Colell during this time.

Biography
Andreu Mas-Colell was born in Barcelona. He studied economics at the University of Barcelona and finished in 1966. He then went to the University of Minnesota in the United States for his advanced studies, earning his Ph.D. in 1972.
Early Career and Teaching
After his studies, he became a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught both mathematics and economics there. In 1981, he moved to Harvard University, where he became a full professor of economics. In 1995, he returned to Barcelona to lead the Department of Economics and Business at Pompeu Fabra University.
He also helped guide important economic journals:
- He was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Mathematical Economics from 1985 to 1989.
- He also led Econometrica from 1988 to 1998.
- He was president of the Econometric Society in 1993.
- He was president of the European Economic Association in 2006.
Public Service in Catalonia
Mas-Colell has held several important roles in the government of Catalonia:
- From 1999 to 2000, he was the Commissioner for Universities and Research.
- From 2000 to 2003, he was the Minister of Universities, Research, and the Information Society. During this time, he created the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). This program helps bring top scientists from all fields to Catalonia to do their research.
- From 2009 to 2010, he was the Secretary General of the European Research Council.
- From 2010 to 2016, he served as the Councillor for Economy and Knowledge in the Catalan Government. In this role, he was in charge of the government's budget and economic plans.
Research
Andreu Mas-Colell's research focuses on using advanced mathematics to understand economics. He is known for bringing back the use of differential calculus (a type of math) into economic studies.
General Equilibrium Theory
He has made big contributions to something called "general equilibrium theory." This theory tries to explain how all the different markets in an economy work together and balance out. His book, The Theory of General Economic Equilibrium, explains how to use modern math ideas to understand this theory.

Andreu Mas-Colell has received many awards and honors for his work:
- He is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences.
- He is an honorary member of the American Economic Association.
- He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
- He is a member of the Academia Europaea.
- He is a member of the Institute of Catalan Studies.
- He is a fellow of the Real Academia de Ciencias Morales y Políticas.
- He is a fellow of the Econometric Society.
He has also received special degrees (honorary doctorates) from several universities, including:
- The University of Alicante in Spain.
- The University of Toulouse and HEC Paris in France.
- The National University of the South in Argentina.
- The University of Chicago in the United States.
He received the Creu de Sant Jordi, which is the highest civil honor in Catalonia. He also won the King Juan Carlos Prize in Economics. In 2009, he received the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Economy, Finance and Management.
To celebrate his 65th birthday, two conferences were held in his honor. The Journal of Mathematical Economics also published a special issue about his work. He was given the Medal of Honor from Pompeu Fabra University.
