Andrew is a small town in central Jackson County, Iowa, United States. In 2020, about 380 people lived there.

History of Andrew

Andrew, located in Jackson County, was named after Andrew Jackson, who was the seventh president of the United States.

Early Settlers and Governor Briggs

In 1841, Ansel Briggs, who later became the first governor of Iowa, settled near Andrew. He first lived in a place called Bluff Mills, then moved his family into town. Briggs worked as the Jackson County deputy treasurer in 1843. He then served as the Sheriff of Jackson County from 1844 to 1846.

Ansel Briggs won the election to become the governor of Iowa in 1846. He served as governor until 1850. To honor him, the people of Andrew put up a granite monument in the city cemetery on September 22, 1909. Even though Briggs was first buried in Omaha, Nebraska, his body was moved to the Andrew Cemetery in 1909.

Town Growth and County Seat

Andrew officially became a town in 1863. The first rules for the town were written down in 1867. For a while, Andrew and Bellevue took turns being the "county seat." The county seat is the main town where the government offices for the county are located. This often helped a town grow. In Andrew, a courthouse and other buildings were built to serve the county government. However, in 1873, the county seat was permanently moved to Maquoketa.

Historic Jailhouse

The Jackson County Jailhouse was built in 1870. It is now a historic building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This three-story building is made of limestone. It used to have the sheriff's office, jail cells, an exercise yard, and a kitchen for the prisoners. The old jailhouse has been fixed up and you can even take tours there today.

Schools and Education

The very first school in Andrew was a log cabin built in 1841. The second school was a wooden building. A brick school building was built in 1889 at the current school location on 13 South Marion Street. Andrew Community School teaches students from preschool up to eighth grade. The high school part of Andrew Community School closed in 2011.

Notable Events and Churches

Andrew is known as the birthplace of Captain Robert M. Losey. He was the first American soldier to die in World War II. He was killed during a German bombing in Norway.

Andrew has three churches: St John's Catholic Church (which is now closed), First Presbyterian Church, and Salem Lutheran Church. Salem Lutheran Church started in 1863 and built one of Iowa's first orphanages.
