Early Life and Amateur Golf
Andrew Chandler has a family background from Turkey. When he was a young amateur golfer, he showed great talent. In 1972, he won a big competition called the British Youths Open Amateur Championship. This was a major achievement for him before he became a professional.
Andrew Chandler's Golf Career
In 1974, Andrew Chandler became a professional golfer. His first big tournament on the European Tour was the Italian Open that same year. A famous golfer named Seve Ballesteros also played his first tour event there.
Chandler played on the European Tour for 15 years. His best year was 1986. He finished 44th on the Order of Merit, which ranks players by how much money they win. In that same year, he had his best tournament result. He finished third at the Italian Open. Even though he never won a European Tour event, he did win one professional tournament. This was the 1985 São Paulo International. After 1986, his golf game became less strong. He decided to stop playing professionally in 1989.
Starting a Sports Management Business
After he stopped playing golf in 1989, Chandler wanted to start a new career. He decided to create a business that would manage sports stars. He talked to other professional golfers like Derrick Cooper, Denis Durnian, Phil Harrison, and Carl Mason. They agreed that he would manage their careers. He started his business with £10,000 from a bank loan. He worked from a small room at Mere Golf Club.
Soon after, in 1990, a young amateur golfer named Darren Clarke asked Chandler for help. Darren Clarke later became one of Chandler's most successful clients.
Growing the Management Company
Chandler's golf management business grew steadily through the 1990s. Then, a cricket player from Lancashire named Neil Fairbrother asked Chandler to manage his young teammate, Andrew Flintoff. Flintoff became very famous during the 2005 Ashes series in cricket. This helped Chandler and his company, ISM, become well-known. Neil Fairbrother later joined ISM after he stopped playing cricket in 2002. He then started his own company in 2018.
ISM's success, especially in golf, became very clear in 2010 and 2011. After his client Darren Clarke won the 2011 Open Championship, ISM had represented four of the last five major golf championship winners. These winners included Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel, Rory McIlroy, and Darren Clarke.
However, Rory McIlroy left ISM in late 2011. He later said that ISM had guided his career in the wrong direction. McIlroy regretted his choice in 2010 to not play on the PGA Tour in the United States. He also skipped the 2010 Players Championship. McIlroy said that Chandler's dislike for the PGA Tour was a main reason for their split.
