Andrew David Hamilton (born 3 November 1952) is a British-American chemist. He is also a university leader. He was the 16th president of New York University from 2016 to 2023. Before that, he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 2009 to 2015. He also served as the Provost of Yale University from 2004 to 2008.

About Andrew Hamilton
Andrew Hamilton was born on 3 November 1952 in Guildford, Surrey, England. He went to Royal Grammar School, Guildford there.
His Education
Andrew Hamilton studied chemistry at several universities.
- In 1974, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with top grades from the University of Exeter in the UK.
- In 1976, he received a Master of Science degree from the University of British Columbia in Canada.
- In 1980, he earned his highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), from the University of Cambridge (specifically St John's College, Cambridge).
After his PhD, he continued his research. In 1981, he was a postdoctoral fellow. This means he did advanced research at the Université Louis Pasteur in France.
His Career in Universities
Andrew Hamilton has had a long career in both science and university leadership.
As a Professor and Researcher
In 1981, he started as a chemistry professor at Princeton University. Later, in 1988, he became a chemistry professor at the University of Pittsburgh.
In 1997, he moved to Yale University. There, he was a professor of Chemistry and also taught molecular biophysics and biochemistry. His research focused on different areas of chemistry. He studied how molecules interact and how they can be used in medicine. In 2004, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important honor for scientists in the UK.
As a University Leader
Andrew Hamilton also took on important leadership roles at universities.
- Yale University: From October 2004 to October 2008, he was the Provost of Yale University. The Provost is a senior leader who helps manage the academic side of the university. Before this, he was the Deputy Provost for Science and Technology. He also led the chemistry department at Yale.
- University of Oxford: In 2008, he was chosen to be the Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University. This is like being the head of the university. He started this role on 1 October 2009 and served for seven years.
- New York University: On 18 March 2015, New York University announced that Andrew Hamilton would be their 16th President. He started this job in January 2016. As president, he was in charge of the entire university. In April 2022, he announced that he would step down from this role after the 2022–2023 school year.
He has also received special honorary doctorates from several universities. These include the University of Surrey, Tsinghua University, and the University of Exeter.

Andrew Hamilton lives with his wife, Jennifer. They have three children.
