Andrew David Hamilton was born on November 3, 1952. He is a British-American chemist and a leader in universities. He was the 16th president of New York University from 2016 to 2023. Before that, he was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford from 2009 to 2015. He also served as the Provost of Yale University from 2004 to 2008.

Early Life and Education

Andrew Hamilton was born in Guildford, Surrey, England. He attended the Royal Grammar School, Guildford there.

He earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, in 1974. He studied at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. In 1976, he received a Master of Science from the University of British Columbia in Canada. He then earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Cambridge in 1980. He studied at St John's College, Cambridge.

In 1981, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow. This means he did research after getting his PhD. He worked at the Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg, France.

Career in Chemistry and Leadership

In 1981, Andrew Hamilton became an assistant professor. He taught chemistry at Princeton University. In 1988, he became a chemistry professor at the University of Pittsburgh.

In 1997, he moved to Yale University. There, he became the Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry. He was also a professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry. His research focused on different areas of chemistry. These included medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2004. This is a very important honor for scientists.

Leadership at Yale University

From October 2004 to October 2008, he served as the provost of Yale University. The provost is a senior leader who helps manage the university's academic programs. Before this, he was the Deputy Provost for Science and Technology. He also led the chemistry department at Yale.

Leading the University of Oxford

On June 3, 2008, Oxford University announced he was chosen to be their next Vice-Chancellor. This is like being the head of the university. On October 1, 2009, he officially started this role. He served for seven years. He is also an Honorary Fellow at two colleges at Oxford: Harris Manchester College and Wolfson College.

He has received special honorary doctorates from several universities. These include the University of Surrey, Tsinghua University, and the University of Exeter.

President of New York University

On March 18, 2015, New York University (NYU) announced a big change. Andrew Hamilton was chosen to be their 16th President. He started his new job in January 2016. He led the university until July 1, 2023. On April 13, 2022, he announced he would step down after the 2022–2023 school year.

Personal Life

Andrew Hamilton lives with his wife, Jennifer Letton. They live in a home provided by the university in Greenwich Village. He has three children.
