Andrew Paul Dost (born April 10, 1983) is an American musician and singer. He is currently the lead singer of the indie jazz band Metal Bubble Trio. Andrew was also a member of the indie rock band Anathallo from 2003 to 2007. Later, he joined the popular indie rock band fun. from 2008 to 2015.

Andrew Dost's Early Life

Andrew Dost grew up in Cass City, Michigan and Frankfort, Michigan. His parents, Mark and Cheryl Dost, were both retired teachers. Andrew graduated from Frankfort High School in 2001 as the top student in his class. He then earned a degree in journalism from Central Michigan University in 2005.

Andrew's father, Mark, always supported his son's musical dreams. He mentioned that Andrew could play many instruments like the flugelhorn, keyboard, guitar, and drums. He could also sing! His parents were very proud that Andrew could make a living doing what he loved.

Andrew Dost's Music Career

Starting with Anathallo

Andrew Dost began his music journey with the band Anathallo. This band started in 2000 at Central Michigan University. Andrew joined them in 2003. He left the band in 2006 while they were working on their album Canopy Glow. He explained that he left because the band moved to Chicago, and he could not move with them.

Creating the Columbus Album

After leaving Anathallo, Andrew started working on his own album called Columbus. This album was based on a musical he wrote in 2005. The musical told a funny version of the story of Christopher Columbus. Critics said the album took a "quirky story" and made a "heartfelt world" for it.

Andrew wrote, produced, and recorded almost all of the album himself. Some friends also helped him, including Michael Nau, Nate Ruess, Joel Thiele, Chris Fafalios, and Steve Soboslai. The Columbus album was released in 2009 on vinyl and as digital music.

Joining the Band Fun.

In 2008, Nate Ruess, who was the lead singer of another band called The Format, asked Andrew to join a new band. Jack Antonoff also joined this new group, which became known as Fun. Andrew already knew Nate and Jack because their old bands had toured together.

When Fun. made their first album, Aim and Ignite, the band members lived in different places. Andrew stayed in Michigan, Nate lived in Arizona, and Jack was in New Jersey.

Fun.'s second album, Some Nights, became very famous. It included their first number one hit song, "We Are Young". Andrew helped write this song with Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, and their producer, Jeff Bhasker. Andrew also created the music for the start of the "Carry On" music video in 2012.

Composing for Movies and TV

Andrew also writes music for movies and TV shows. He composed the soundtrack for the movie The D Train, which came out in 2015. He even worked with his bandmate Jack Antonoff on this soundtrack.

Andrew Dost's Solo Work

Since late 2015, Andrew has talked about releasing more new music on his own. In an interview in 2016, he said he was "finishing an album" and scoring films and TV shows. He enjoys trying out music in many different ways.

Andrew mentioned that he loves '60s pop music and likes to experiment with modern sounds. He likes The Beatles, musical theater, and even Drake. In 2016, he performed two new songs, "Where Did They Go" and "Young Republicans," at the Detroit Music Awards. These songs have not been officially released yet.

Interestingly, Andrew also composed music specifically for dogs in 2014! Since Fun. took a break, Andrew has been involved in films, podcasts, TV shows, and even digital art projects called NFTs. In 2021, Andrew moved back to Michigan to focus on his music and art there. He also started teaching music at the Interlochen Center for the Arts.
