Andrew Paul Dost (born April 10, 1983) is an American musician and singer. He is well-known for being a member of the band fun., which had hit songs like "We Are Young." Andrew also plays in the indie bossa nova/jazz band Metal Bubble Trio, where he is the lead singer. Before fun., he was part of the indie rock band Anathallo.

Andrew Dost's Early Life

Andrew Dost grew up in Cass City, Michigan and Frankfort, Michigan. His parents, Mark and Cheryl Dost, were both retired teachers. Andrew graduated from Frankfort High School in 2001. He then went on to study journalism at Central Michigan University, finishing in 2005.

Andrew's father, Mark, shared that they always encouraged his musical talents. Andrew plays many instruments, including the flugelhorn, keyboard, guitar, and drums. He can also sing. His family is very proud that he can make a living doing what he loves.

Andrew is also a strong supporter of equality for all people. He helped start The Ally Coalition. This group works with entertainers and their fans. They help raise awareness and support for LGBTQ+ equality.

Andrew Dost's Music Career

Starting with Anathallo

Andrew Dost began his music journey with the band Anathallo. This band formed in 2000 at Central Michigan University. Andrew joined them in 2003. He left the band in 2006 because they moved to Chicago, and he could not move with them.

His Solo Album: Columbus

After leaving Anathallo, Andrew started working on his own album called Columbus. This album was based on a musical he wrote in 2005. The musical was a funny story about the life of Christopher Columbus. The album took a unique story and created a heartfelt world for it.

Andrew wrote, produced, and recorded almost all of the album himself. Some friends also helped him, including Nate Ruess from The Format. The album was released in 2009.

Joining the Band Fun.

In 2008, Nate Ruess, who was the lead singer of The Format, asked Andrew to join a new band. Jack Antonoff also joined this new group, which became the band Fun. Andrew already knew Nate and Jack because their old bands had toured together.

When they made Fun.'s first album, Aim and Ignite, the band members lived in different cities. Andrew was in Michigan, Nate was in Arizona, and Jack was in New Jersey.

Fun.'s second album, Some Nights, became very popular. It included their first number one hit song, "We Are Young." Andrew helped write this song with Nate Ruess, Jack Antonoff, and their producer, Jeff Bhasker. Andrew also created music for the start of the "Carry On" music video in 2012.

Composing for Movies

Andrew also composes music for films. He created the soundtrack for the movie The D Train, which came out in 2015. This soundtrack included a song he worked on with his Fun. bandmate, Jack Antonoff.

Andrew Dost's Solo Work

Since late 2015, Andrew has been working on new music. In 2016, he shared that he was finishing an album. He was also composing music for films and TV shows. He enjoys trying out music in many different ways.

Andrew mentioned that he is influenced by 1960s pop music. He also likes to experiment with modern sounds. He enjoys The Beatles, musical theater, and Drake. In 2016, he performed new songs called "Where Did They Go" and "Young Republicans" at the Detroit Music Awards. These songs have not been officially released yet.

Andrew has also composed music specifically for dogs! Since Fun. took a break, Andrew has been involved in many creative projects. These include films, podcasts, and TV shows.

In 2021, Andrew moved back to Michigan. He wanted to work on his music and art locally. Around this time, he also started teaching in the singer-songwriter program at Interlochen Center for the Arts.
