Andrew Ebbett (born January 2, 1983) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played the centre position. After retiring as a player, he became the general manager for the Swiss team SC Bern.

Ebbett also played for Team Canada in many international games. He helped his team win a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Hockey Career

College and Early Pro Years

Andrew Ebbett started his hockey journey playing for the University of Michigan. He was the captain of his team, the Wolverines, in his final year. Even though he was a good player, no NHL team chose him in the draft.

However, the Ottawa Senators saw his talent. They signed him as a free agent in 2006. He started his professional career with their minor league team, the Binghamton Senators in the AHL.

A year later, in 2007, Ebbett joined the Anaheim Ducks organization. He played for their AHL team, the Portland Pirates. He played so well that he got called up to the NHL. He played his first three NHL games with the Ducks that season. The team was happy with his performance and gave him a new two-year contract.

Making a Mark in the NHL

In the 2008–09 season, Ebbett started with the Iowa Chops, another AHL team. But soon, the Ducks called him back to the NHL. On his 26th birthday, January 2, 2009, he scored his first-ever NHL goal against the Philadelphia Flyers.

He had a great season, scoring 32 points in 48 games. He even scored his first Stanley Cup playoff goal. This goal helped the Ducks pull off a big upset against the San Jose Sharks.

Playing for Different Teams

Over the next few years, Ebbett played for several different NHL teams.

  • Chicago Blackhawks: In October 2009, the Blackhawks claimed him off waivers. This means they picked him up when the Ducks made him available to other teams.
  • Minnesota Wild: After 10 games in Chicago, he was claimed by the Wild in November 2009. He scored a goal in his very first game with his new team. He finished the season with Minnesota, scoring 8 goals.
  • Phoenix Coyotes: In 2010, he signed a one-year deal with the Coyotes.
  • Vancouver Canucks: He joined the Canucks in 2011 and played with them for two seasons.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins: In 2013, he signed a two-year contract with the Penguins.

During this time, Ebbett often split his seasons between the NHL and the AHL. He played for teams like the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Success in Europe

In 2015, Ebbett decided to play hockey in Europe. He signed a contract with SC Bern, a top team in Switzerland's National League (NL). This was a great move for him.

He helped SC Bern win the Swiss championship in 2016, 2017, and 2019. He was a key player for the team, scoring many important goals and assists in the playoffs. In 2018, he was named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP).

After a successful time in Switzerland, Ebbett played one final season in Germany. He played for EHC München before officially retiring from professional hockey in 2021.
