Andrew Mellon: Banker and Leader
Andrew Mellon was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1855. His family was involved in banking and business. As he grew up, Andrew became very skilled in finance. He helped manage and expand his family's bank, the T. Mellon & Sons Bank. He also owned parts of many large industrial companies. These companies made things like aluminum, coal, and oil. This made him a very wealthy and powerful person in America.
America's Money Man
In 1921, Andrew Mellon was chosen to be the Secretary of the Treasury. This is a very important job in the United States government. The Secretary of the Treasury is like the country's chief financial officer. They are in charge of managing the government's money, collecting taxes, and making sure the economy is strong.
Mellon served under three different presidents: Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. He was known for his ideas about cutting taxes and reducing government spending. He believed this would help businesses grow and create more jobs. Many people thought his policies helped the American economy during the 1920s, a time often called the "Roaring Twenties."
