A Look at Andrijevica's History
Andrijevica itself is a fairly new town. It started to grow in the mid-1800s. But the area around it has been home to people for a very long time. Many settlements have appeared and disappeared throughout history in this region.
Ancient Times and Early Settlements
Scientists found signs of ancient cultures in the nearby Berane valley. They discovered tools and remains from the Neolithic period, which was the New Stone Age. Traces of Illyrian culture were also found. This suggests that many different groups of people lived here long ago. Even the Romans had settlements in the Berane valley and near Andrijevica.
The Middle Ages and Old Forts
During the Middle Ages, there was a fort called Grace. It was about 1 kilometer from where Andrijevica is today. This fort likely protected a road along the Lim River. This road was an important connection between the regions of Raška and Zeta. Many small villages also grew in this period, long before Andrijevica became a town.
The Nemanjić Era and a Special Church
When the House of Nemanjić ruled, the Andrijevica area had many Orthodox Christian people. The main center of the area was a place called Budim grad, about 15 kilometers from today's town. A person from the Nemanjić family, named Andrija, built a church called Andrijevina. Sadly, the Ottomans destroyed this church in 1765.
The Vasojevići Tribe and Town Growth
In the 1800s, a brave warrior tribe called the Vasojevići lived here. They often fought against the Ottoman rule. They started building a settlement around a new church, also called Andrijevina. This settlement slowly grew into what we now know as Andrijevica. In 1858, the Vasojevići Duke Miljan Vukov declared their region a part of Montenegro.
Modern Times and Challenges
Andrijevica slowly became a proper town. However, its growth was paused by World War I. After the war, from 1918 to 1921, Andrijevica was an important county center. The time between the two World Wars was a period of fast development for the town.
During World War II, the town faced a difficult period in July 1944. After the war, Andrijevica continued to be an administrative center. It was first a district seat and then a municipality seat until 1960. Andrijevica got its municipality status back in 1991. The town's economy was hit hard when industries declined during the Yugoslav Wars. This caused the population to slowly decrease.
