Andriy Parubiy's Education
Andriy Parubiy studied history at the University of Lviv. He graduated in 1994, becoming a historian and history teacher.
Later, in 2001, he continued his studies at Lviv Polytechnic State University. There, he focused on political science and sociology.
His Political Journey
Andriy Parubiy has been involved in Ukrainian politics for a long time. He was an activist even before Ukraine became independent in 1991. He was arrested in 1989 for organizing a protest rally.
In 1991, he helped start a youth organization that later became a political party. He was involved in this group until 2004.
Key Political Roles
Parubiy took part in the Orange Revolution in 2004. This was a series of protests against election fraud in Ukraine.
In 2007, he was elected to the Ukrainian parliament (the Verkhovna Rada). He was part of the "Our Ukraine–People's Self-Defense Bloc" political group.
From December 2013 to February 2014, he was a key leader during the Euromaidan protests. He helped organize the volunteer security for the protesters.
After these protests, he was appointed Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine. This council helps make important decisions about Ukraine's safety. In this role, he supported efforts to protect Ukraine's borders and stability in eastern Ukraine. He stepped down from this role in August 2014.
Later Parliamentary Career
In September 2014, Parubiy helped create a new political party called People's Front. He was re-elected to parliament with this party in October 2014.
In December 2014, he became the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. This means he was the second-in-command of the parliament.
On April 14, 2016, Andriy Parubiy was elected as the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. This is like being the speaker of the parliament, leading its meetings and work.
In the 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election, Parubiy was re-elected to parliament as part of the European Solidarity party. He finished his term as Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada on August 29, 2019.
Understanding Disinformation
Sometimes, politicians can be targets of false information, also known as disinformation or fake news. Andriy Parubiy has often been a target of such campaigns, especially from pro-Russian media.
For example, after a court decision about referendums (when people vote directly on a law), Parubiy warned that referendums could be used to trick people. He mentioned that even historical figures like Adolf Hitler used referendums to achieve their goals. However, some media outlets twisted his words, making it seem like he was praising Hitler, which was not true. This was later shown to be false by human rights groups and media watchdogs. It's important to always check information from different sources.
Awards and Honors
Andriy Parubiy has received an honor from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, which is a major leader in the Eastern Orthodox Christian church. He received the cross of St. Andrew the First-Called.
