Andriy Volodymyrovych Parubiy (born on January 31, 1971) is a Ukrainian politician. He served as the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, which is like the speaker of Ukraine's parliament, from April 14, 2016, to August 29, 2019. Before that, he was the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine. He was appointed to this role after the Euromaidan protests in 2014. He resigned from this position on August 7, 2014.

Education and Early Life

Andriy Parubiy studied history at the University of Lviv. He graduated in 1994, becoming a historian and history teacher. Later, in 2001, he continued his studies in political science and sociology at Lviv Polytechnic State University.

During the time leading up to Ukraine's independence in 1991, Mr. Parubiy was an activist. He was even arrested in 1989 for organizing a protest rally. In 1991, he helped start a political group. He later left these early groups in 2004 to pursue other political paths.

Political Career

Andriy Parubiy was involved in the Orange Revolution in 2004, a series of protests in Ukraine. In 2007, he was elected to the Ukrainian parliament, known as the Verkhovna Rada. He was part of the "Our Ukraine–People's Self-Defense Bloc."

Before becoming a member of parliament, he served as a deputy in the Lviv regional council. In early 2012, he left the "Our Ukraine" party because their ideas no longer matched. He was re-elected to parliament in 2012 with the "Batkivshchyna" party.

From December 2013 to February 2014, Mr. Parubiy was a leader during the Euromaidan protests. He helped organize the volunteer security for the protesters. After these events, he was appointed Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. This appointment was confirmed by then-President Petro Poroshenko in June 2014.

As Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Mr. Parubiy supported efforts to counter pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine. He resigned from this role on August 7, 2014. He stated that he would continue to help the front lines, especially volunteer groups.

In September 2014, Mr. Parubiy helped create a new political party called "People's Front." He was re-elected to parliament in October 2014 as a member of this party. On December 4, 2014, he was chosen as the Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.

On April 14, 2016, after Volodymyr Groysman resigned, Andriy Parubiy was elected as the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. This is a very important role, similar to the speaker of a parliament in other countries. In February 2019, he signed a document to create a special office to help improve how parliament works.

In the July 2019 Ukrainian parliamentary election, Mr. Parubiy was a candidate for the "European Solidarity" party. He was re-elected to parliament. On August 29, 2019, Dmytro Razumkov took over as the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada.

Addressing Misinformation

Even though Andriy Parubiy left his early political groups in 2004, he has often been the target of false information and "fake news" from pro-Russian media. These media outlets sometimes incorrectly call him a "Nazi," especially after the 2014 Revolution of Dignity.

For example, when a law about national referendums was declared unconstitutional, Mr. Parubiy warned that referendums could be used to trick people. He mentioned that Adolf Hitler also used referendums in Nazi Germany to achieve his goals. However, Russian and some pro-Russian Ukrainian media twisted his words. They claimed that Mr. Parubiy had openly praised Hitler. This claim was later proven false by human rights groups and media watchdogs. This shows how important it is to check information carefully.

Awards and Recognition

Andriy Parubiy has received an important honor from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople: the cross of St. Andrew the First-Called.
