Andrés Mignucci Giannoni (born December 17, 1957, in Ponce, Puerto Rico – died November 21, 2022) was a famous Puerto Rican architect. He was also an urbanist, which means he designed cities and public spaces. His family came from Corsica.

Mignucci was known for making public spaces that felt special. He combined architecture (designing buildings), urban design (planning cities), and landscape architecture (designing outdoor areas). His goal was to create places that felt right for people and were good for the environment.

In 2005, he became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. This is a high honor for architects. He also won the Henry Klumb Award in 2012. In 2019, he received the Distinguished Professor Award. He was even a special scholar at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Italy.

Andrés Mignucci passed away in San Juan on November 21, 2022, when he was 64 years old. Architects in Puerto Rico honored his amazing work and legacy.

Becoming an Architect and Urban Designer

Andrés Mignucci studied architecture at two well-known universities. He went to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and then to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned his degrees in 1979 and 1982.

After college, Mignucci trained with important urban designers. He worked with Stephen Carr and Kevin A. Lynch from 1983 to 1986. He also trained with a German architect named Erich Schneider-Wessling.

Designing Public Spaces

  • Luis Muñoz Rivera Park: He helped restore this park, which is San Juan's oldest public space.
  • Plaza de Isabela: This was the main town square in Isabela.

Andrés Mignucci also taught architecture. He was a professor at several universities, including the Universidad Politécnica de Puerto Rico. He was also a visiting professor in Spain, the United States, and Denmark.
