About Angela Nikodinov
Angela Nikodinov was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. When she was a child, her family moved to southern California. She grew up in San Pedro, Los Angeles, California. Her parents were immigrants from Bulgaria, and Angela can speak Bulgarian very well.
In July 2008, Angela married Ivan Dinev, who is also a figure skater from Bulgaria. They have a daughter named Audriana, who was born in May 2012.
Her Skating Journey
Starting Out
Angela Nikodinov began skating when she was about five years old. She trained in Lake Arrowhead, California.
Early Successes
Angela won a bronze medal at the U.S. Championships in 1999. After that, she competed at the Four Continents Championships, where she also earned a bronze medal. She made her first appearance at the World Championships that year, finishing in 12th place.
For the 1999-2000 season, Angela trained in Detroit. She placed 4th at the U.S. Championships and then won the gold medal at the Four Continents Championships. She finished 9th at the World Championships that year.
Challenges and Comebacks
Angela moved back to California in 2000 because she missed home. She had to withdraw from the 2001 Goodwill Games due to an eye problem. Her coach, Elena Tcherkasskaia, who she was very close to, passed away in November 2001.
Despite these challenges, Angela won a bronze medal at the U.S. Championships and a silver medal at the Four Continents Championships in 2001. She placed 5th at the World Championships for the third time.
Angela missed the entire 2002-03 skating season. She had a shoulder injury twice and then got a virus that made her weak. She had surgery on her shoulder in February 2003 and couldn't skate for seven months. After missing two Grand Prix seasons, Angela made a strong return and won the 2004 Skate America competition.
In 2005, while in Portland, Oregon, for the U.S. National Championships, Angela and her family were in a car accident. Sadly, her mother passed away in the accident. Angela did not return to competitive skating after this difficult event.
Throughout her career, Angela worked with many coaches, including John Nicks, Peter Oppegard, Frank Carroll, Elena Tcherkasskaia, and Richard Callaghan. Her choreographers helped her create beautiful routines.
After Competing
After retiring from competitive skating, Angela Nikodinov became a coach. She coached Bulgarian figure skater Ivan Dinev in the 2005-06 season.
As of 2014, Angela is the skating director at the Skating Edge in Harbor City, California. She coaches there alongside Ivan Dinev, who is now her husband. She also sometimes performs in skating shows.
Angela and Ivan have coached several talented skaters. Some of their former students, like Bianca Butler / Joseph Jacobsen and Tenile Victorsen, have competed at the senior level in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. They also coached Kaitlyn Nguyen, who won the 2017 U.S. junior ladies' title. Today, they coach together at the Lakewood Ice Skating Club in Lakewood, California, along with Derrick Delmore.
