Angela's Skating Career

Starting Out and Early Success

Angela Nikodinov started skating when she was about five years old. She trained in Lake Arrowhead, California.

In 1999, Angela won a bronze medal at the U.S. Championships. After that, she competed at the Four Continents Championships. There, she also won a bronze medal. She then made her first appearance at the World Championships, finishing 12th.

Winning Gold and Facing Challenges

For the 1999-2000 season, Angela trained in Detroit. She placed 4th at the U.S. Championships in 2000. Later that year, she won a gold medal at the Four Continents Championships. She finished 9th at the World Championships that season.

Angela moved back to California in the fall of 2000 because she missed home. She had to withdraw from the 2001 Goodwill Games. This was due to a problem with her left eye. Her coach, Elena Tcherkasskaia, who was very important to her, passed away in November 2001. Despite this, Angela won bronze at the U.S. Championships in 2001. She also earned a silver medal at the Four Continents Championships. She placed 5th at the World Championships that year.

Injuries and Comeback

Angela missed the entire 2002-03 skating season. She had a shoulder injury twice, in February and September 2002. She also got a virus that made her very weak. She had to leave the U.S. Championships after the first part of the competition. Angela had surgery on her shoulder in February 2003. She could not skate for seven months after that.

After missing two seasons of the Grand Prix series, Angela made a strong return. She won the 2004 Skate America competition in 2004.

A Difficult Time

In 2005, while in Portland, Oregon, for the U.S. National Championships, Angela and her family were in a very sad car accident. After this difficult event, Angela did not return to competing.

During her career, Angela worked with many coaches. These included John Nicks, Peter Oppegard, Frank Carroll, Elena Tcherkasskaia, and Richard Callaghan.

After Competing

After her competitive career, Angela Nikodinov became a coach. She coached Bulgarian figure skater Ivan Dinev in the 2005-06 season. In 2014, she was the skating director at the Skating Edge in Harbor City, California. She coaches there with Ivan Dinev.

Angela sometimes performs in skating shows. She was a guest skater on the Stars on Ice tour. Some of her and Ivan Dinev's former students have competed at the senior level in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. These include Bianca Butler / Joseph Jacobsen and Tenile Victorsen. They also coached Kaitlyn Nguyen, who won the 2017 U.S. junior ladies' title. Angela and Ivan now coach at The Rinks-Lakewood ICE. They are part of the LA Elite Ice group in Lakewood, California.
