Angellica Aribam (born in 1992) is an Indian activist. She works to make politics fair for everyone. She also helps people understand issues like gender and race.

Angellica was chosen for the special VVEngage Fellowship. This program helps women leaders around the world. It was started by famous American leaders Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright. In 2017, Forbes India magazine named her one of the '30 Under 30' young leaders. This was for her important work in politics. She was also the first student from North-east India to be elected to the Delhi University Students' Union.

Early Life and School

Angellica Aribam was born in Imphal, Manipur, India. She is the youngest of three children. When she was 12, she moved to New Delhi to finish her schooling.

She went to school at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Andrews Ganj. In 2012, she earned her bachelor's degree in Biochemistry. She studied at Sri Venkateswara College, which is part of the University of Delhi. Later, in 2017–2018, she took a break from politics. During this time, she earned her master's degree in Public Policy from Peking University in China.

Angellica's Journey in Politics

Angellica Aribam joined the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in July 2012. This is the student group of the Indian National Congress party. She has said that unfair treatment towards people from North-east India pushed her to join politics.

In September 2012, Angellica was elected to a student committee at Delhi University. She then won an election for the Delhi University Students’ Union. This made her the first person from North-east India to be elected to this important student group.

In December 2012, she became a National Secretary in the NSUI. She was the youngest person ever to join this national committee. In 2013, she was the only speaker from North-east India at a big political meeting. She talked about the challenges faced by people from her region across the country.

Before the 2014 national elections, Angellica helped write the student plan for the Indian National Congress party. In March 2016, she was promoted to National General Secretary of the NSUI. She left this role in July 2017 after five years. She wanted to make space for younger leaders.

Activism and Important Causes

Angellica Aribam is known for her work on several important issues.

Fighting Racism

Angellica is a strong activist against racism. She joined politics after violence against students from North-east India in 2012. She has often asked for new rules to protect people from racism. She spoke out when a political party called North-eastern Indians "immigrants." This led to the party clarifying their statement.

She has said that representing a minority group adds pressure. If someone from a minority group makes a mistake, it can be seen as a mistake of the whole community. This makes leaders work even harder.

In March 2020, Angellica faced online abuse with racist insults. She reported it to the police. She also started a petition asking the Prime Minister to speak out against racism. This petition got a lot of support, and the Prime Minister later made a statement.

Internet Freedom

Angellica believes in a free and open internet for everyone. She supports the idea of Net Neutrality. This means internet providers should treat all data equally. She helped the Congress party bring up Net Neutrality in the Indian Parliament in 2015.

Menstrual Health

Angellica also works for menstrual health. She wants to make sure women in Indian prisons have access to clean sanitary products. In 2015, she was held by the police during a protest. She found that the prison could not give her a menstrual pad. After this, she worked with the Delhi Police. She asked them to provide free sanitary pads in prisons.

Women’s Rights

Angellica is a feminist who believes in equal rights for women. In 2016, she wrote an article about unfair rules for women at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). This article helped show how much gender discrimination was happening there. After her article, protests grew, and activists at BHU got support from all over India.

She works to get more women into politics. She says that more people from all communities need to be involved in making decisions.

Different Time Zone for North-east India

In May 2017, Angellica started a petition. She asked the government to create a separate time zone for North-east India. India currently has only one time zone, even though it is a very wide country. Experts believe a different time zone would help people use daylight better for work. It could also save energy.

Women in Politics and Femme First Foundation

Angellica Aribam strongly supports more women in politics. She has written and spoken about the need for the Women's Reservation Bill. This bill would set aside seats for women in government. She also believes that women need training and support to succeed in political groups.
