Angelo Moriondo was an Italian inventor born on June 6, 1851. He is famous for inventing the very first espresso machine in 1884. His machine used steam and boiling water to make coffee quickly and well. He passed away on May 31, 1914.
Angelo Moriondo's Early Life
Angelo Moriondo came from a family of business owners. His grandfather started a company that made liqueurs. Angelo's father, Giacomo, continued this business. Later, Giacomo also started a chocolate company called Moriondo and Gariglio. He did this with his brother Agostino and his cousin Gariglio.
Angelo himself bought two important places in Turin. He owned the Grand-Hotel Ligure in the city center. He also owned the American Bar in the Galleria Nazionale.
The First Espresso Machine
Angelo Moriondo showed his new invention at a big event. This was the General Expo of Turin in 1884. His machine won a bronze medal there. He received a patent for his invention on May 16, 1884. The patent was called "New steam machinery for the economic and instantaneous confection of coffee beverage, method ‘A. Moriondo’." A mechanic named Martina built the machine. He worked closely with Angelo Moriondo.
Moriondo kept making his invention better. He got another patent on November 20, 1884. The invention was also registered in Paris on October 23, 1885. This made it an international patent. He continued to improve his machine over the next few years. Each improvement was also patented.
Angelo Moriondo never made his espresso machine in large factories. He only built a few machines by hand. He kept these machines in his own businesses. He believed this would help advertise his hotel and bar.
Ian Bersten is a historian who writes about coffee. He said Moriondo's device was "the first Italian bar machine." It could control steam and water separately for the coffee. Bersten also called Moriondo "one of the earliest discoverers of the expresso machine." Unlike later espresso machines, Moriondo's machine made a lot of coffee at once. It did not make coffee for just one person.
Angelo Moriondo's Legacy
