Angels Camp, also known as City of Angels, is a small city in Calaveras County, California, United States. It's the only city in the county. In 2020, about 3,667 people lived there. The city sits at an elevation of 1,381 feet (421 meters) above sea level.

Angels Camp is famous because of a story by the writer Mark Twain. He based his short story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" on a tale he heard in 1865 at the Angels Hotel. Every May, the city celebrates this story with a special event called the Jumping Frog Jubilee. This is why Angels Camp is sometimes called "Frogtown."

The city is also recognized as California Historical Landmark #287.

History of Angels Camp

Angels Camp began in 1848 when Henry Angell set up a tent store by a creek. People came to the area to search for gold. At first, they found gold in the creek beds, but these easy-to-find gold deposits soon ran out.

Later, people discovered gold in quartz veins within the rocks. This brought more people back to the town. These mines worked for many years and produced over $20 million worth of gold. This gold was processed using large machines called stamp mills right in town. It's said that when the last mill stopped working, the town became so quiet that people found it hard to sleep!

The first post office opened in 1851 and was called Carson's Creek. It was renamed Angels Camp in 1853. The city officially became a city, or "incorporated," in 1912.
