Anier Octavio García Ortiz (born March 9, 1976) is a famous Cuban track and field athlete. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the 110 metres hurdles at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Anier García was born in Santiago de Cuba. He showed his talent early on by winning the 1995 Pan American Junior Championships. This was a big win for young athletes in the Americas. The next year, he competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics. He made it to the quarter-finals, which was a good start for him.

Becoming a World Champion

In 1997, Anier García became well-known around the world. He won the 60 metres hurdles at the World Indoor Championships in Paris. This race is shorter than the outdoor hurdles. Later that year, he competed at the World Championships in Athens. He had a leg injury but still finished second in his quarter-final race. However, he had to pull out of the semi-finals because of the injury.

In 1999, García won the Pan-American Games. This is a major sports event for athletes from North and South America. He then competed at the World Championships. He finished second, earning a silver medal. He was beaten by another great hurdler, Colin Jackson.

Olympic Glory

The most exciting part of Anier García's career was at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Many people thought the Olympic final for the 110 m hurdles would be very close. But Anier García ran an amazing race! He won the gold medal easily, beating Terrence Trammell by a good margin.

After his Olympic win, García continued to do well. He won another silver medal at the 2001 World Championships. He also earned silver medals at the 2001 and 2003 World Indoor Championships in the 60 m hurdles.

In 2003, he couldn't compete at the World Championships because of a thigh injury. But he came back strong for the 2004 Summer Olympics. At those games, he won the bronze medal in the 110 m hurdles. This showed his amazing skill and determination.
