Anna's Early Life
Anna Bergendahl was born in Hägersten, Stockholm. She grew up in the towns of Nyköping and Katrineholm. Part of her family comes from Ireland, as her grandmother was born and lives there. Anna's very first performance for an audience happened in a cathedral in York when she was only eight years old.
Her Journey on Idol 2008
Anna successfully auditioned for the TV show Idol 2008. She sang "Have a Heart" by Bonnie Raitt, and the judges loved her performance. During the show, she sang many famous songs. These included "Mamma Mia" by ABBA and "Bleeding Love" by Leona Lewis.
Anna finished in fifth place in Idol 2008. After the show, in 2009, she was asked to record a song for Melodifestivalen 2010.
Melodifestivalen and Eurovision 2010
Anna Bergendahl took part in Melodifestivalen 2010 with her song "This Is My Life". Kristian Lagerström wrote the lyrics, and Bobby Ljunggren composed the music. The song won the final on March 13, 2010, with a high score of 214 points.
This victory meant Anna would represent Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 in Oslo, Norway. However, she became the first Swedish singer since 2004 not to reach the Eurovision final. Even though she placed 11th in her semi-final, she missed qualifying by just 5 points. "This Is My Life" was the first slow song (ballad) to win Melodifestivalen since 1998. It was also Sweden's 50th song entry in the Eurovision Song Contest.
Music Career: 2010 to Today
After Eurovision, Anna appeared on popular Swedish TV shows like Allsång på Skansen. She also went on a tour, performing songs from her first album. In 2012, Anna released her second album, Something to Believe In. The first song from this album was "Live and Let Go".
In 2019, she released two new songs, "Home" and "Speak Love". She also competed in Melodifestivalen 2019 with her song "Ashes to Ashes". Anna returned to Melodifestivalen 2020 with the song "Kingdom Come". She finished in third place. This song became the second most played song on Swedish radio and sold platinum.
Later in 2020, Anna released "Thelma and Louise". Her EP (Extended Play) called Vera came out in October 2020. It included five songs that Anna wrote herself. By the end of that year, she also released a Christmas song, "It Never Snows in California". On August 13, 2021, Anna released "Grain of Trust", which she wrote with Peter Kvint.
Anna competed in Melodifestivalen again in 2022 with the song "Higher Power". She reached the final on March 12, 2022, where she finished in last place.
