Early Life and Karate Champion
Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson was born on April 7, 1991, in East Tilbury, Essex, England. Her mother was a teacher, and her father was a builder. She has an older sister named Samantha.
From a young age, Anne-Marie loved to perform. When she was six, she secretly tried out for the famous musical Les Misérables and got a part. At age twelve, she performed in another show, Whistle Down the Wind, alongside a young Jessie J.
Besides singing, Anne-Marie is a skilled martial artist. She started practicing Shotokan karate when she was nine years old and earned a black belt. She became a triple world champion, winning gold medals in 2002 and 2007. She says karate taught her discipline and focus, which helps her in her music career.
Music Career
2013–2015: Getting Started

In 2013, Anne-Marie released a demo song called "Summer Girl." It got noticed after singer Ed Sheeran shared it on his Twitter. This led to her working with the band Rudimental.
For two years, Anne-Marie toured with Rudimental as one of their singers. She sang on four songs on their album We the Generation. This experience gave her the confidence to start her own solo career. In 2015, she released her first collection of songs, an extended play (EP) called Karate EP.
2016–2018: Breakthrough with Speak Your Mind
In 2016, Anne-Marie released the single "Alarm", which became a big hit in the UK. Later that year, she was the main singer on Clean Bandit's song "Rockabye" with rapper Sean Paul. The song was a massive success, staying at number one in the UK for nine weeks.
She followed this with more hits like "Ciao Adios". In 2018, she worked with DJ Marshmello on the song "Friends", which became a top-five hit.
On April 27, 2018, she released her first full album, Speak Your Mind. It included the song "2002", which was co-written with Ed Sheeran. "2002" became one of her most popular songs worldwide. It was especially huge in South Korea, where it was the most-streamed song of 2019. The album Speak Your Mind was the best-selling debut album by a British artist in 2018.
