Anne Calvert, Baroness Baltimore (born Hon. Anne Arundell; around 1615 or 1616 – July 23, 1649) was an English noblewoman. She was the daughter of Thomas Arundell, 1st Baron Arundell of Wardour. Her mother was Anne Philipson. Anne Calvert was married to Lord Baltimore. He was famous for starting the Province of Maryland colony in America. Anne Arundel County in the US state of Maryland is named after her. Also, a US Navy ship, the USS Anne Arundel (AP-76), was named after the county.

Who Was Lady Anne Calvert?
Anne Arundell was born around 1615 or 1616. Her family was very important in England. She grew up in Old Wardour Castle in Wiltshire, England. People said she was very beautiful and talented.
Her Family and the New World
Anne married Cecil Calvert, the second Lord Baltimore. This happened in 1628. Cecil's father, Sir George Calvert, had already tried to start a colony. This first colony was called Avalon. It was in Newfoundland, which is now part of Canada.
Starting the Maryland Colony
The Avalon colony did not work out. So, Cecil Calvert decided to try again. In 1633, he started a new colony. This colony was in the Chesapeake Bay area. It was north of the Virginia colony. The new colony was named "Maryland". It was named after Henrietta Maria. She was the French wife of King Charles I.

Anne and Cecil Calvert had nine children together. Four of their children lived to be adults.

Her Lasting Legacy
Anne Calvert died on July 23, 1649. She was buried at St. John's Parish church. This church is in Tisbury, Wiltshire, England. Even though she lived a long time ago, her name lives on. Anne Arundel County in Maryland is a reminder of her.
