Anne Jules de Noailles (born February 5, 1650 – died October 2, 1708) was an important French nobleman. He was also a skilled military leader. He served as a general for King Louis XIV of France. A famous artist named Hyacinthe Rigaud even painted his portrait.
Who Was Anne Jules de Noailles?
Anne Jules de Noailles was born into the House of Noailles, a very old and respected family in France. His father was also named Anne de Noailles. When his father passed away in 1678, Anne Jules became the new Duke of Noailles. This meant he held a high rank in French society.
A Brave Military Leader
Anne Jules de Noailles was known for his military skills. He was one of the top generals during the later years of King Louis XIV's rule. In 1689, he created his own army group, called the regiment of Noailles.
He led French forces in Spain during two major wars. These were the Nine Years' War and the War of the Spanish Succession. His bravery and leadership were recognized. In 1693, he was given the title of Marshal of France. This was a very high honor for a military commander.
His Family and Children
Anne Jules de Noailles was married to Marie Françoise de Bournonville. Together, they had many children. Some of his children also became important figures in French history. For example, his son Adrien Maurice later became the 3rd Duke of Noailles. His daughter Marie Victoire de Noailles married into the royal family. She became the Countess of Toulouse.
