Annette Elizabeth Salmeen, born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on December 7, 1974, is an American scientist. She is famous for being a gold medalist at the 1996 Summer Olympics. She also became a Rhodes Scholar in 1997, which is a special scholarship for studying at Oxford University.

Annette Salmeen's Swimming Journey

Annette Salmeen started swimming competitively when she was just 9 years old. She became a top swimmer at Huron High School in Ann Arbor. There, she was a co-captain of the girls' swimming team for two years.

High School and College Achievements

While at Huron High, Annette won the state championship three times in the 500-yard freestyle race. She also won once in the 100-yard butterfly. After high school, Salmeen went on to swim for the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA, she was a co-captain and was named an All-American four times. She also became an NCAA national champion in the 200-yard butterfly.

Olympic Gold Medal

In 1995, Annette won a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan. The next year, she qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. She earned a gold medal for swimming in the first races of the women's 4×200-meter freestyle relay. This helped the U.S. team win the gold medal in the final. In her individual Olympic race, the 200-meter butterfly, she finished 12th overall.

Studying at Oxford University

Annette Salmeen graduated from UCLA in 1997 with a degree in chemistry. She then received a special Rhodes Scholarship. This scholarship allowed her to study for a Doctorate of Philosophy (D. Phil.) in biochemistry at Oxford University in England.

Swimming in England

During her four years at St John's College, Oxford, Annette continued to swim. She was a member of the Oxford University Swimming Club. She set three new records in long-course swimming and six new records in short-course swimming.

Life After Oxford

Annette earned her doctorate degree in 2001. After that, she returned to the U.S. to work as a researcher at Stanford University.

Work in Science and Education

In 2005, she was chosen to be on the board of the United States Anti-Doping Agency. This agency works to keep sports fair and clean. Annette returned to Stanford University in 2022. Today, she teaches and helps organize courses in the Human Biology program. She also teaches about health, biology, and how to use big data at Stanford University.
