The city of Anthony was first planned out in 1878. It was named after George T. Anthony, who was the 7th governor of Kansas at that time.

Becoming the County Seat

In 1878, Harper County was reorganized. Anthony was chosen as the temporary county seat. This was because the previous county seat, Bluff City, didn't actually exist.

In 1879, an election was held to decide the permanent county seat. Anthony won against Harper City. This happened even though many more votes were cast than there were legal voters in the county.

Railroads and Transportation

For a long time, Anthony was an important hub for railroads. By 1891, two major railroads, the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad and the Missouri Pacific Railway, crossed paths here.

By 1912, three more railroads came through town. These included the Choctaw Northern Railroad and the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad. However, by the year 2000, all train services to Anthony had stopped.
