Anthony Harris Bennett (born March 14, 1993) is a Canadian professional basketball player. He last played for the Formosa Dreamers in Taiwan. Anthony played college basketball for one year at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

He was the very first player chosen in the 2013 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. This made him the first Canadian ever to be picked number one overall in the NBA draft. He played four seasons in the NBA.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Anthony Bennett was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in Toronto and later moved to Brampton when he was ten. His mother, Edith Bennett, was a nurse from Jamaica. She raised Anthony and his two older siblings by herself, working two jobs.

When he was 16, Anthony moved to West Virginia to play basketball at Mountain State Academy. A year later, he moved to Nevada to play for Findlay Prep. He was considered one of the top high school basketball players in the country.

Many colleges wanted Anthony to play for them. He decided to go to UNLV in May 2012.

College Basketball Career

During the 2012–13 college season, Anthony Bennett played 35 games for UNLV. He mostly played as a power forward but sometimes as a small forward. He averaged 16.1 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

He played very well, even though he had a shoulder injury during the season. UNLV made it to the NCAA tournament but lost in the first round.

In April 2013, Anthony decided to enter the NBA draft. This meant he would not play his last three years of college basketball.

Professional Basketball Journey

Starting with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2013–2014)

Anthony Bennett was chosen as the first overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. This was a big moment for Canadian basketball.

He signed a contract with the Cavaliers in August 2013. His first season in the NBA was tough. He struggled to score points at first.

In January 2014, he scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a game. This was his first time scoring double figures in the NBA. In February 2014, he had his first "double-double" with 19 points and 10 rebounds. A double-double means getting double-digit numbers in two different stats, like points and rebounds.

He played 52 games for the Cavaliers, averaging 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per game.

Moving to the Minnesota Timberwolves (2014–2015)

In August 2014, Anthony was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He played well for them at times. In November 2014, he scored a career-high 20 points in a game.

He had an ankle injury in February 2015, which kept him out for a couple of weeks. He finished the season averaging 5.2 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. In September 2015, the Timberwolves decided to let him go.

Playing for Hometown Toronto Raptors (2015–2016)

In September 2015, Anthony signed with his hometown team, the Toronto Raptors. He played his first game for them in October.

In December 2015, Anthony made history. He became the first number one overall NBA draft pick to play in the NBA Development League (now called the G-League). He played a game for the Raptors' minor league team, Raptors 905. He was later sent to Raptors 905 a few more times. The Raptors released him in March 2016.

Time with the Brooklyn Nets (2016–2017)

Anthony signed with the Brooklyn Nets in July 2016. He played his first game for them in October, scoring nine points.

He also spent some time playing for the Nets' G-League team, the Long Island Nets. In December 2016, he had a career-high 14 rebounds in a game. The Nets waived him in January 2017.

Winning in Europe with Fenerbahçe (2017)

In January 2017, Anthony signed with Fenerbahçe, a team in Turkey. He played in the EuroLeague, which is a top basketball league in Europe.

Fenerbahçe won their first-ever EuroLeague title in 2017! Anthony was part of the team that achieved this big win. He was released by the team in May 2017.

NBA G League and International Play (2017-Present)

After his time in Europe, Anthony played for several teams in the NBA G League. These included the Northern Arizona Suns, Maine Red Claws, and Agua Caliente Clippers. He also played for the Canadian national team during this time.

In 2021, he played for a team in Puerto Rico. Then, from 2021 to 2022, he played for Hapoel Jerusalem in Israel.

Since 2022, Anthony has been playing basketball in Taiwan. He joined the Kaohsiung Steelers in February 2022. He then signed with Hsinchu JKO Lioneers in August 2022. In 2023, he briefly joined a team in Korea. Most recently, he signed with the Formosa Dreamers in Taiwan in December 2024. His contract with them ended in March 2025.
