About Anthony Perosh
Perosh grew up in Sydney, Australia. His parents were immigrants from Croatia. He started training in martial arts in 1995. He was 23 years old at the time. This training helped him with his security work.
He first learned Kempo Karate and Muay Thai. Later, he discovered Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In 1997, Perosh moved to Dallas, Texas. He trained there for over two years with Carlos Machado. Machado was a World BJJ Champion.
In 2003, Perosh earned a black belt in Machado Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He was 31 years old. Today, he holds a fourth-degree black belt under Machado. After getting his black belt, Perosh began training to compete in mixed martial arts.
His Mixed Martial Arts Career
Starting Out
Anthony Perosh had his first professional mixed martial arts fight on 29 November 2003. He won by using a move called a rear-naked choke. He fought two more times that same night and won both matches.
Perosh quickly built a strong record of 5 wins and 1 loss. His only loss was a decision against Sam Nest. Because of his success, he was invited to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
First Time in the UFC
Perosh made his UFC debut at UFC 61. He fought Jeff Monson, who was also a skilled grappler. Monson won the fight by technical knockout. This led Monson to a championship fight later.
Perosh's next UFC fight was at UFC 66 against Christian Wellisch. It was a tough fight with both fighters landing punches. The judges decided that Wellisch won. After this fight, Perosh left the UFC for a while.
Fighting Outside the UFC
After leaving the UFC, Perosh continued to fight. In 2009, he competed in the Cage Fighting Championships (CFC). He won his quarter-final and semi-final matches. In the finals, he lost to James Te-Huna.
Returning to the UFC
Perosh returned to the UFC at UFC 110 in Australia. He stepped in at the last minute to fight Mirko Cro Cop. Doctors stopped the fight in the second round because Perosh had a cut. Even though he lost, the UFC was impressed. They gave him a new four-fight contract.
Perosh then had knee surgery. He made his light heavyweight debut at UFC 127. He quickly defeated Tom Blackledge with a rear-naked choke. This was his first win in the UFC. He felt much stronger at this weight.
He continued his winning streak at UFC 138 in 2011. He defeated Cyrille Diabaté by submission. In 2012, he won against Nick Penner by TKO.
Later in 2012, Perosh faced Ryan Jimmo at UFC 149. He lost this fight by knockout in just 7 seconds.
In August 2013, Perosh fought Vinny Magalhães at UFC 163. He won by knockout in only 10 seconds! This amazing win earned him a Knockout of the Night bonus.
He continued to fight in the UFC until 2015. He faced tough opponents like Ryan Bader, Sean O'Connell, and Gian Villante.
In January 2016, Anthony Perosh announced he was retiring from fighting.
Life Outside the Ring
Anthony Perosh used to run a martial arts school called Sinosic Perosh Martial Arts (SPMA). He ran it with his training partner, Elvis Sinosic.
Since late 2017, Perosh has run his own school, Team Perosh Mixed Martial Arts. It is located in Sydney, Australia. At his school, he teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and wrestling.
His nickname is "The Hippo." He got it because of his jiu-jitsu style. He used a lot of pressure from the top position. This made his training partners say, "Get off me you hippo!"
