Anthony Lavell Reed (born January 3, 1971) is an American former professional basketball player. He was a talented player who started his journey in high school in Louisiana. After high school, he played college basketball at Tulane University.

At Tulane, Anthony Reed was named the Metro Conference Freshman of the Year. He also earned "all-conference" awards in all four of his seasons. He became Tulane's all-time leading scorer with 1,896 points. He was also the 4th best rebounder in the school's history.

In the 1993 NBA draft, the Chicago Bulls picked Anthony Reed. He was the 41st player chosen overall. However, he was waived before the NBA season began. He then played basketball in many countries, including Croatia, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Venezuela, and Japan. In 2015, he was honored by being added to the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Anthony Reed's High School Basketball Career

Anthony Reed was born in Monroe, Louisiana. He played basketball for his high school team at Wossman High School in his hometown. He played as a center and forward.

During his junior year, he scored about 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds per game. This earned him a spot on the All-District 2-AAA First Team. In his final year, he was recognized as an Honorable Mention for the 1988–89 Triple-A All-State Boys Team. He was also named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of an all-star game. In that game, he scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Anthony Reed's College Basketball Journey

Anthony Reed joined Tulane University in November 1988. His coach, Perry Clark, chose him to be a starter from his very first year. As a freshman, Reed started all 28 games. He led his team in rebounds per game (8.4) and minutes played (35.3). He was also the second-highest scorer with 18.4 points per game.

He set new records for a freshman at Tulane. He scored 514 points and had the highest scoring average for a freshman. He scored 20 or more points in 12 different games. At the end of his first year, he won the Metro Conference Freshman of the Year award. He was also chosen for the All-Metro Conference second team.

Sophomore Year Success

In his second year, Anthony Reed started every game again. He led his team in scoring (16 points per game), minutes played (34.3), rebounds (7.9), and blocks (0.8). On December 8, 1989, he scored his career-high of 32 points in a game against Tennessee Tech. His great playing during his sophomore year earned him a spot on the first-team All-Metro Conference.

Junior Year Achievements

During his junior year, Reed led his team in rebounding (6.5) and minutes per game (28.1) for the third year in a row. He was also the second-highest scorer on his team, averaging 14.4 points per game. That year, Tulane won the Metro Conference title, and Reed was a key player.

He was named to the NABC All-District first team and the All-Conference second team. Tulane also played in the 1992 NCAA tournament. Reed played in both tournament games, scoring 12 points in each.

Senior Year and Legacy

In his final season at Tulane, Reed once again led his team in scoring (15.7 points), rebounding (6.8), minutes (33.5), and blocks (0.9). On December 23, 1992, he set a new personal best with 6 blocks in a game. He also led the team in 3-point shooting percentage.

On March 6, 1993, which was "senior day," Tulane honored him by retiring his jersey number, 55. In that game, he scored his 1,853rd point, becoming Tulane's all-time leading scorer. At the end of the year, Reed was selected for the All-Metro Conference first team. He also played in the 1993 NABC all-star game. In the 1993 NCAA tournament, Reed played in both games, scoring 12 points and 11 points.

Anthony Reed played 118 games in his college career, starting every single one. He finished with 1,896 total points, which was a school record at the time. He also ranks 4th in total rebounds with 871. He had 26 "double-doubles" (meaning he got double-digit numbers in two different stats, like points and rebounds, in one game). He also had 32 games where he scored 20 or more points. Reed helped Tulane become a nationally ranked team in his last two seasons. In 2015, he was inducted into the Louisiana Basketball Hall of Fame.

Anthony Reed's Professional Basketball Career

After college, Anthony Reed was eligible for the 1993 NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls chose him as the 41st pick overall. He joined the Bulls for their preseason training camp in July 1993. He also played in the Rocky Mountain Revue, which is an NBA Summer League.

He signed a contract with the Bulls in October, but they decided to waive him (release him from the team) later that month. After this, Reed moved to Europe to play basketball.

Playing in Europe

Anthony Reed first joined KK Split in Croatia. Then, he moved to Dinamo Sassari in Italy. He played one game in the Italian league, scoring 8 points and getting 4 rebounds.

In 1994, Reed went to Spain and played for Saski Baskonia. He played 6 regular season games and 4 playoff games, averaging 7.1 points and 6 rebounds per game. After Spain, he moved to Slovenia and joined Olimpija Ljubljana. He played there for two seasons. During his time in Slovenia, he won two national titles and one national cup. In 1996, he was named a Slovenian league All-Star.

After Slovenia, he moved to Cyprus and played for APOEL B.C. in Nicosia. In September 1997, he signed with a team in Argentina, but only played in friendly games before being released.

Later Career

In 1998, Anthony Reed briefly played for Trotamundos de Carabobo in Venezuela. He was released after only 10 days. He ended his basketball career in 1999 after playing one season for the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins in Japan.

Interestingly, while he was listed as 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall in the United States, he was later measured at 6 feet 6 inches (1.99 meters) when he played in Europe.
