Anthony Stewart Head (born 20 February 1954) is an English actor and singer. He became famous in the UK during the 1980s. This was after he appeared in popular TV ads for Nescafé coffee.
He is best known for playing Rupert Giles in the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003). He also played the Prime Minister in Little Britain (2003–2006). Other big roles include Uther Pendragon in Merlin (2008–2012) and Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso (2020–2023). He also voiced Herc Shipwright in the BBC Radio 4 show Cabin Pressure.

Early Life: How Anthony Head Started Acting
Head was born in Camden Town, London. His father, Seafield Laurence Stewart Murray Head, was a filmmaker. His mother, Helen Shingler, was an actress. His older brother, Murray Head, is also an actor and singer.
Anthony went to Sunbury Grammar School. He then studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He once said that acting was a natural choice for him. He remembered being six years old and thinking, "This is what I want to do."
Career: Anthony Head's Journey in Acting
1970s to 1990s: Early Roles and Big Breaks
One of Head's first roles was in the musical Godspell in 1978. That same year, he made his TV debut in Enemy at the Door.
In the late 1980s, he became widely known. He starred in a series of coffee commercials for Nescafé Gold Blend. These ads, with Sharon Maughan, ran from 1987 to 1993.
In 1997, he got a major role as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He played a librarian who was also a vampire watcher. He lived in the United States while filming Buffy. He was a main character for five seasons. Later, he appeared as a guest star until the show ended.
2000s: From Comedy to Sci-Fi
In 2002, Head co-starred in the BBC Two series Manchild. This show was about four friends dealing with getting older. He also appeared in dramas like Silent Witness and Spooks.
From 2003 to 2005, he played the Prime Minister in the comedy show Little Britain. He also had guest roles in Monarch of the Glen.
Head also had several roles in the Doctor Who universe. In 2006, he played an alien headmaster, Mr. Finch, in the episode "School Reunion". He also narrated Doctor Who Confidential, a behind-the-scenes show. He even voiced a character in the animated Doctor Who special, "The Infinite Quest".
In 2006, he played Captain Hook in a live show at Buckingham Palace. This was part of Queen Elizabeth II's 80th birthday party.

In 2008, Head starred in the musical horror film Repo! The Genetic Opera. He played Nathan Wallace, an organ repossessor. The film also featured Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton.
He also did a lot of radio work. He played two main characters in the BBC Radio 4 comedy Bleak Expectations. He also had a regular role in the sitcom Cabin Pressure.
From 2008 to 2012, Head was a main cast member in the BBC drama series Merlin. He played King Uther Pendragon, the father of Prince Arthur.
2010s to Present: Recent Projects
Anthony Head has continued to work in film, TV, and radio. He provided voice-over work for the Nintendo Wii video game Flip's Twisted World.
In 2018, he joined the cast of the long-running BBC radio soap opera The Archers. He played Robin Fairbrother.
From 2019, he played Bill in the TV series Motherland. From 2020 to 2023, he played Rupert Mannion in the popular show Ted Lasso. For his role in the final season, he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
In 2023, he returned to his role as Giles in an audio series called Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. He was joined by many of his former Buffy co-stars.

Anthony Head lives in Bath, Somerset, England. His partner is Sarah Fisher. They have two daughters, Emily and Daisy. Both of his daughters are also actresses.
