Club career
Starting at Anderlecht
Anthony Vanden Borre grew up playing football at the Anderlecht youth academy in Belgium. He trained there with his friend, Vincent Kompany, who also became a famous footballer. Anthony was very young when he played his first professional game for Anderlecht. He was only 16 years and 187 days old. At that time, only one other player had debuted at a younger age.
Many people thought Anthony was an amazing talent. Some even believed he would be a bigger star than Kompany. He was praised for his skills, passing, and understanding of the game. However, Anthony's time at Anderlecht was sometimes difficult. He had some injuries and his performance was not always consistent. This led to him being seen as a bit of a "bad boy" by the media and his coaches.
Even with these challenges, many big clubs were interested in him. These included teams like Hamburger SV, Ajax, Inter Milan, and Tottenham Hotspur. But Anthony decided to stay with Anderlecht for a while longer, signing a new contract in 2005.
Playing in Italy
In 2007, Anthony moved to Italy to play for Fiorentina. He signed a four-year contract. He made his first game in Italy's top league, Serie A, in October. Even though he didn't play much, he felt he was learning and improving.
In 2008, Anthony moved to another Italian club, Genoa. He saw this as a great chance to play more. He played his first game for Genoa in March 2008. He later said he was happy at Genoa and wanted to stay. In his first full season, he played 25 games for the team.
Time at Portsmouth
In 2009, Anthony joined Portsmouth in England on a loan deal for one season. He played his first game for them in August. He scored his first goal for Portsmouth in a cup game in September 2009. He also scored an own-goal in a match against Manchester United.
Later, he received a red card in a game, which meant he couldn't play in the next match. His time at Portsmouth was tough because the club was struggling and was eventually moved down to a lower league. After the season, he did not return to Portsmouth.
Moving to Genk
After his loan at Portsmouth, Anthony returned to Genoa. He then moved to the Belgian club Genk in 2010. He officially joined Genk in January 2011 and signed a two-year contract.
He made his debut for Genk later that month. He played an important role in helping Genk win the national title that season. The next season, he played in the Champions League for Genk. He scored his first goal for Genk in April 2012 against his old club, Anderlecht. At the end of that season, Genk decided not to offer him a new contract.
Coming back to Anderlecht

In 2013, Anthony Vanden Borre made a big return to Anderlecht after five years away. He was given a second chance by the club. His teammates were happy to see him back. He played his first game back for Anderlecht in March 2013.
In November 2014, he scored two goals in a Champions League group match against Arsenal. Anderlecht was losing 3–0 but managed to draw the game 3–3, thanks in part to his goals.
Loan to Montpellier
In 2016, Anthony went on loan to Montpellier, a club in France. He played 10 games for them. In January 2017, he returned to Anderlecht.
First Retirement and TP Mazembe
On January 10, 2017, Anthony announced that he was retiring from football at the age of 29. However, he didn't stay retired for long! In March 2017, less than two months later, he signed with TP Mazembe, a club in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. But he only stayed there for four months.
Second Return to Anderlecht
After three years without playing for any club, Anthony Vanden Borre made another return to Anderlecht in 2020. This time, he reunited with his old friend, Vincent Kompany, who was the manager of the team.
International career
Anthony Vanden Borre has citizenship in both Belgium and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He chose to play for Belgium. He played his first international game for Belgium when he was just sixteen years old, in April 2004.
He later played for Belgium in important tournaments. These included the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and the 2008 Summer Olympics. In May 2014, he was chosen to be part of Belgium's team for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
