Anti-Nebraska movement facts for kids
The Anti-Nebraska movement was a political group in the United States. It formed because people were against the Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854. This act allowed slavery to spread into new U.S. territories. It also canceled a rule from the Missouri Compromise that had forbidden slavery north of a certain line (36° 30' N). At that time, "Nebraska" could mean a large area west of the Missouri River. The Republican Party grew out of this Anti-Nebraska movement.

Why the Movement Started
Most people in the Anti-Nebraska movement thought the Kansas–Nebraska Act was unfair. They saw it as a way for the Southern states to gain more power. They believed it broke the rules set by the Compromise of 1850 and the Missouri Compromise. Many were worried about new slave states forming in northern areas. These areas were meant for free settlers.
It's important to know that opposing the spread of slavery was different from wanting to end slavery everywhere. Only a few people in the Anti-Nebraska movement were true abolitionists. Abolitionists wanted to completely abolish slavery.
How the Movement Grew
The first public sign of opposition was the Appeal of the Independent Democrats. This happened in January 1854. After this, many local "anti-Nebraska" meetings took place across the United States.
People from different groups joined the movement. These included members of the Free Soil Party, Conscience Whigs, and some Democrats who were against slavery's expansion. Some wanted to create a brand new political party. This new party would focus on stopping slavery from spreading. Others just wanted to work together on this one issue. They didn't want to leave their current political parties.
The Rise of the Republican Party
After the Kansas-Nebraska Act passed in May 1854, opposition to slavery's spread remained strong. This feeling grew even more when Kansas became known as "Bleeding Kansas" due to violence.
At the same time, the Whig Party was falling apart. There was a competition to form a new major party. Some wanted a party based on stopping slavery's expansion. Others wanted a party against immigration and Catholicism, like the "American Party" or Know-Nothings.
After some complex political moves, the anti-slavery Republican Party emerged. By 1856, it became one of the two largest parties in the United States. It was the organized group that followed the Anti-Nebraska movement. You can learn more about this in the 1856 United States presidential election.
Key Leaders of the Movement
Salmon P. Chase was a very important person in the Anti-Nebraska movement. Abraham Lincoln also returned to politics because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. He had been focusing on his law practice. Lincoln became a well-known anti-Nebraska speaker in central Illinois.
