Early Life and Education
Antoinette Sayeh went to Swarthmore College for her first degree. After that, she continued her studies at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. There, she earned her master's degree and her Ph.D. in International Economic Relations. This means she studied how different countries' economies work together.
Working Around the World
Ms. Sayeh has a lot of experience working with money and economies in different parts of the world. She worked for the World Bank, which is an organization that helps countries develop. While at the World Bank, she was a country director for Benin, Niger, and Togo. This meant she helped these countries manage their money and improve their public services. She also worked in Pakistan to help them with their government's money management and how their public workers were organized.
Leading Liberia's Finances
From 2006 to 2008, Antoinette Sayeh served as the Minister of Finance for her home country, Liberia. She was part of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's team. It's interesting to know that Ms. Sayeh was only the second woman in Liberia's history to hold this important position. The first was President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf herself!
When she was the Minister of Finance, Ms. Sayeh had some big goals. She wanted to:
- Reduce Liberia's large national debt (the money the country owed).
- Organize and improve the country's banking and financial system.
- Fight against corruption, which is when people in power use their position for dishonest gain.
Role at the International Monetary Fund
In July 2008, Antoinette Sayeh moved from her role in Liberia to join the leadership team at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She became the Director of the Africa Department. In this job, she became one of the most influential African leaders in the world when it comes to money and economic policies. The IMF works to make sure the world's money system is stable and helps countries with financial problems.
Awards and Recognition
Antoinette Sayeh has received special honors for her work:
- Swarthmore College gave her the Lucretia Mott Award.
- The government of Niger thanked her for her support with a special ceremony in April 2007.
